(USA) Is It Rude To Ask To Bag Your Own Groceries? (beehaw.org)

Is there some rule that employees have to follow that doesn't allow customers to bag? Or is it just that they're incentivized to offer? I'd love some input from people who have worked in some of the bigger companies. For reference, I mostly use Publix.

In Australia the cashier typically bags your groceries. It was a shock for me when I first moved to the UK and the first cashier I was served by was like "Are you ready?!" And then started hurling a barrage of groceries to at me to bag.
