Yeah, and even in the US I'd wager you'll find a large population of people who hold this viewpoint in most if not all political affiliations

It's actually especially interesting in the privacy community. You can distinctly observe people who value privacy on the left and right with vastly different concerns who ultimately have the same end goal in mind. I've observed a lot of political discourse to be people expressing the same core values where political ideology is simple a difference in where "exceptions" to the core values should lie.
