I think the only area where machine learning has made actual accomplishments is in research.

If you use speech recognition or optical character recognition, to grab two examples, you're using software that generally has involved machine learning. Those are both fields that I'd call successful for quite some years and are applied to areas outside of research.

Thanks for the addition! I added that last bit because I did not want to discount the areas where machine learning has had actual success, but I haven't dug too deep into it.
