mp4 is not really a video format. Depending on how recent they are they'll play a broader or narrower range of MP4 files, depending on codec selection.
Mp4 is a container format that stores mpeg4.14 video, audio, subtitles, and still images (traditional use case). You're 100% correct and I'm not saying otherwise. I only wanted anyone who didn't know this background, to have it, just for their own edification.
