How did I get to thirty before realizing the expression comes from people eating horses when they're starving and have no other option

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Buddy, I'm 41, and I always thought until just now it was saying you were "so hungry you could eat a(n entire) horse."

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

That's how I've always interpreted it too.

OHHH

I thought it's just because horses are so big, because you're so hungry that nothing smaller could satisfy your hunger.

So, if you're even hungrier than that, the expression could be "I'm so hungry I could eat Jimmy".

It's pretty much an Anglo Saxon exception that horse meat isn't eaten... It's not as popular as it once was in Quebec, but it used to be readily available...

Well sure, there used to be a lot more horses that died annually, back when they were a primary means of transport.

I'm talking about the 2000s... Horse meat can still be found in some groceries, I think it's still more common in France than in Quebec though

I know, I was joking in sort of a not-jokey-very-dry sort of way.

I wish there was a universal (lawl I’m unserious but being very dry about it) tag. Because that stuff doesn’t translate to text well at all.

Such a layer of emotion and presentation behind communication to get around! So difficult! And I have a degree based around doing exactly that…

On a side note, we have dry humor which implies a wet humor and.. I’m curious what that is but I sort of don’t want to know…?

Which expression? I'm fluent in English but don't know all expressions

[–] teft@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.

Makes sense. Thanks!
