I'm shocked of the behavior of Mikrotik !

I take time here to expose what happen to me in order for others to know my story ( and therefore expose the mentality of this company ..)

I had a question about one of their product that I own.
So I created an account on their forum space

  • fill the form
  • "play" with the captcha
  • wait the registration email
  • confirm
  • adjust settings in the user control panel

Took already some times, then I create my first post related to the question that I had.

after posting I got ~"Your post need to be approved before it's been published"

I'm not a fan of this method already, but I waited, next day when I login on their forum I got:

๐Ÿ˜ต WTF !

The username is exactly the same as I use here James_PTG Of course in my avatar we can read the expanded version:

"James Patageul" is a play of words because I sound the same as (in french) "J'aime pas ta gueule" Translate in "I don't like your face"

So first of all, on a scale of "outrageousness" let say this one got a low score..

Secondly, why a Permanent BAN[^1] !?? They could simply had removed the avatar and changed the name if they didn't appreciate it.. ( and still why they have to appreciate or not ? it's a forum ( public place ) ) ?

I'm baffled how they treat their customers...

So long Mikrotik..

You are complaining that a private company decided that your account does not meet their standards?

I used to help admin a forum manually processing hundreds of newly registered accounts and there is about 9001 reasons why an account would be banned or blocked.

Some of the more common ones were (not all were used by themselves):

  • Account registered using a VPN
  • Account registration coming from an IP/IP range that is a known spam risk
  • Disposable Email provider used to register the account
  • Email provider a known spam risk
  • Account details and IP details don't match up (Account says they are in USA but IP is Russian)
  • Account details are suspect (as in they don't make sense in context to each other)
  • IP/ IP range is from a country with spam/scam risks
  • Used a bot to mass register accounts
  • Username used for spam on other platforms

And this was 10 years ago when there wasn't automated tools to precheck accounts just to reduce the amount spammers/scammers/CSA material/Hackers trying to get in. Nowadays it is most likely worse.

If you think your account was banned in error then send a polite email to the board admin as it suggests in the message you got.

They will likely give you more detail about why your account was banned and if it was in error they will unban it.
