Depends entirely on where exactly you are. The only place you can be certain you're allowed to camp is official camping grounds (Campingplätze / Zeltplätze). Everywhere else MAY tolerate you for a night (unless you behave like idiots, of course) or they might chase you off or even, if you're unlucky, fine you.
(Disclaimer: not legal advice in any way, just based on general experience from living here and ViBeS) I would assume that sleeping in your car would be the safest route if you're determined to avoid fees. People are less likely to assume you're setting up permanently but will be more willing to believe that you're just passing through and couldn't find a place for the night or whatever.
Thanks for the reply. I've been looking around at camping grounds since posting, but it doesn't even seem like any allow check-ins by the time we'll be arriving in Travemünde (01:00). Most close by 18:00 already and a single one by the latest 22:30 (they charged 10€ extra for late check-in).
Perhaps since the weather is supposed to be decent it might just be worth finding a dead-end forest road and plopping down for a few hours even w/o pitching a tent.
The part that is not allowed outside of camping areas is setting up a tent that damages the ground by flattening it and blocking circulation due to the ground sheet.
If you camp without a tent or don't have a ground sheet, you're perfectly fine.
