Waka Kotahi monitoring Auckland Harbour bridge

Waka Kotahi says it is closely monitoring the Auckland Harbour Bridge and that it could close if wind gusts exceed 90km/h.

The Harbour Bridge has been placed under a red alert from midday until 9pm tonight, with wind gusts between 90 and 110km/h forecast.

Waka Kotahi says it's working closely with MetService to monitor the wind speeds, with maintenance crews ready to react when wind gusts exceed the threshold.

It's asking drivers of high vehicles and motorcyclists to avoid the bridge and use State HIghway 16 and 18 instead.

It’s extremely windy here. We’re just out of Hamilton and it’s crazy! Roads are littered with recycle bins and rubbish from this mornings “collection”
