What are the pros and cons to federating with meta?

[-] felbane@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago

Pros:

  • You get Uncle JimBob's boomer meme posts in your Lemmy feed now

Cons:

  • FaceMeta suddenly represents a huge percentage of the userbase for ActivityPub, starts adding "extensions" that only work through Threads, promotes "free communication" between those on Threads and those elsewhere, then slams the door on everyone else causing fragmentation in the space and hopefully (from their perspective) killing the protocol.

At least, that's more or less what happened with XMPP. I'm not entirely convinced that Threads federation will lead to the same fate, but the idea of having Facebook shit in my feeds is not an appealing prospect in the first place.

Ahh embrace, extend, extinguish. Don’t ever change tech juggernauts, don’t ever change 💎👌

Don't get to enjoy a relative monopoly by letting infant competitors grow up...

Based take here. I wonder who authorises and encourages these monopolies to grow in contravention of their own "rules"? Certainly not fed boys bent on knowing everything about you and wanting to encourage you to give it all to them willingly so these monopolies can pass it all along to their gov. goon sponsors and partners? It's a "free" market after all. Evil private Facebook, Google, legacy corporate media, et al just happen to share the exact same priorities as the well-intentioned security state control freak 3-letter propaganda organizations using your tax dollars against you. Funny how that works.

Look where you are right now. Reddit won't allow users to even name Lemmy so we can tell them where we are.

Do you think Meta might do the same at some point?

Could this be yet another attempt to contain and control us?

This is a "let's just invite Professor Lechter over for dinner, he seems like a friendly fellow" moment for Lemmy and the Fediverse.

Admins of each instance can choose which other instances to federate/share your info with.

Here's the convo on lemmy.world... https://lemmy.world/post/9527528?scrollToComments=true

The whole thing is there, submitted for your approval. If anyone recognizes shills by now, it's us.
