How do you discover new apps ? (lemmy.ml)

Ive been trying to find some new interesting apps on the playstore but the problem is that I cant find anything that wasnt paid to show up first on the lists. I know already about F-droid.

I used to try apps mentioned in subreddits but those days are over for me.
I search on F-Droid
Asking in different communities is a decent method.
