Between my Spotify weekly playlist and wdcb here in the Western burbs of Chicago I am a happy camper. I like miles Davis, Lonnie Smith, fusion jazz, and the like. Not a big fan of the big bands from days of yore.
If you’re new to jazz and have Spotify, there is a Spotify-curated playlist called, “Jazz Classics.” If you’re doing it the old fashioned way, you could do worse than starting with these albums: Kind of Blue, Love Supreme, Mingus Ah Um, Red Garland’s Piano, Time Out and almost any good Charlie Parker compilation of which there seem to be dozens.
Don Caballero The liner notes of the album's promotional CD stated that "Don Caballero is rock not jazz. Don Caballero is free of solos."
So take this as an odd recommendation, but I find I like a lot of instrumental rock and I feel it's very close to jazz.
Last few records I've had spinning:
- Ahmad Jamal Trio - At the Pershing
- Ryo Fukui - Letter from Slowboat
- Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Mingus: At Bremen 1964 & 1975 (Live at Bremen, Germany, April 16, 1964 and July 9, 1975)
Would highly recommend Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard. One of the greatest soul jazz albums.
I stumbled on Everything Yes and really liked that style of jazz. Also am I big fan of snarky puppy
Recently listening to some vocal jazz albums; I really liked Tony Bennett's When Lights Are Low. Aside from that, Hot Rats is my album of choice right now: a timeless classic for all listeners, new or old.
