The bravery of this man is astounding. I can’t comprehend how he managed to stand up to the pressure he was placed under, and stay apparently resilient and in good humour

Yup.

Utterly awed by his behaviour throughout.

Opposed to his ideology, but the idea of political prisoners is so repugnant, and I think anyone can admire his unflinching fight against corruption.

A few might be willing to risk death, but the prospect of torture extended over many years is chilling to the core. Seems Navalny was under no illusions which he was facing into when he openly returned to Russia having already been poisoned.

A hero. May his resistance be an inspiration.

Actually - don't know much about his ideology, what did you find distasteful?

Far-right nationalism.

EDIT: to be clear, he wasn't imprisoned for this, but for standing against Putin & against corruption.

Pre-emptive and hopefully unnecessary: shall we agree on no rehashing of jokes about falling out of windows or shooting himself in the head? Plenty to discuss about the man himself and his death, I assume.

For example, what I'm wondering is: why now? Or more specifically: why didn't this happen earlier, and what changed for that reason to no longer hold?

Oh god, yes please

Between poisonings & beatings & withholding of medical care & general conditions in Russian penal colonies, it is possible his body just gave up.

Or there's stuff afoot under the surface which was making Putin too nervy to leave Navalny alive.

This is pure speculation from me but I'd say because enough time has passed to make it relatively irrelevant. The war and Russia in general are back to being minor news, so even though a lot of news networks will probably mention his death, I doubt they'll go very in depth about it.

Why not later? Why take the risk? Only a matter of time until enough of his allies gathered up and create turmoil to pressure his release. Or for some foreign influence to get involved when they realize his worth in taking on the Russian regime.

Edit: Other option is that they just planned to let him rot and didn't care too much about allies. Probably got mistreated and suffered from exhaustion, dehydration and malnourishment. Only a matter of time until the body gives up

Well, it's a pretty big deal in the UK...

If anybody believes this can't happen in the US, just listen to what Trump is saying. He's very clear about his plans.
