Kings fan here. I hope this thing takes off so we can have individual team spaces and all the stuff we had on Reddit.
It's still early in this hockey community. Nobody has even been chirping Leafs fans yet. Enjoy the moment.
I'm just trying to get this one more active and trying to post stuff regularly since I couldn't find any other active hockey community. If more people come I'm sure some team communities will pop up.
Thank you for effort so far to get the community going!
I love hockey. Everyone that's participated in this community so far has been awesome. I think we are lucky on the timing. It would have been a lot harder to get people active after the cup finals and especially after the draft.
Well that lasted roughly half an hour haha. Sounds good, looking forward to seeing this community grow!
I honestly didn't know leafs fans could use technology.
Tips: watch out for zamboni drivers in net.
Seriously, welcome. Nucks fan here, so I'll hold off on any major chirping
Good to see that our fan base will get chirped no matter where we go. It's comforting
Here we go. Now it's a real hockey community.
I'll keep that tip in mind, I think we have some aging vets that your team is primed to sign for too long and too much money ;)
Looking forward to participating in this community!
Jokes on you. We just got rid of luongos contract, so we can over sign a bunch of past their prime vets.
NYR fan, here for the chirps and general bants o7
I think the thing I am most wanting for will be GDT/PGTs. Using Hockey Discord for now, but would be willing to put some effort in on that side if this community gains traction.
Hurricanes fan, checking in!
Same. Hope we have GDT in place by next season!
We are doing one for all the remaining games this year. It's not really very refined at this point but post your suggestions in the next one and we can work on building a good system out as a community.
GDT == Game Day Thread? Any reason people can't just post a thread? I created !usmlr@lemmy.ml (check it out if you're a rugby fan) and have been posting match threads manually. Are there bots that
Yeah we posted the last game day thread manually. It would be nice to work out some fancier formatting for next year but we have all summer and hopefully there will be some improvements to lemmy by then too so we will see what can be done.
I love watching rugby but I still don't quite understand all the rules and I know dick all about any of the players. If you want I can try to add your community in our sidebar. Hopefully I can add some text there that says friends of c/hockey. I'm still learning here.
Yeah the rules in rugby are a bit harder to learn than hockey, though I've yet to find a rule in rugby that newbies understand less than icing, which doesn't seem like it should be hard to figure out!
The biggest issue with hockey in North America is the the officiating is so discretionary. Icing is actually a very simple rule, but it's not always called by the book and that makes hockey rules difficult to understand. I can imagine this is frustrating to a new fan.
I'm fortunate that I'm able to take my kids to a few hockey games a year. I find it helps to sit higher up so that they can see the whole game and that helps them see how plays develop and how positioning works better than sitting at ice level. Even they can see that rules are basically ignored at times and arbitrary calls are made to even out the game. When I look at how the rules in rugby are handled it's just better in my opinion. I'm ok with refs missing calls sometimes, cause the game is fast and that's going to happen, but the game management and trying to balance penalties and keep the game close kind of makes me lose interest cause the game ends up depending on luck a lot of the time. That's my rant for the night. I'm going to bed.
Hi, welcome! Here are a few hopefully helpful links:
- https://browse.feddit.de/ a list of communities across the lemmyverse.
- https://lemmy.one/post/1600 a nice post summarizing some interesting ones.
- https://lemmymap.feddit.de/ a map of instances and their federation status.
Also, it works pretty much like Reddit. You can sort by New, Hot etc., but you can also filter whether you see posts from communities you're subscribed to, from all communities in your instance, or from all currently federated communities from any instance. Communities and instances have mods and sidebar, and there is a public modlog so everyone can see what actions have been recently taken. You can also create communities and moderate them yourself. Enjoy!
Anaheim Ducks fan representing!
Sad you guys lost out on Bedard, would have been awesome with all your young talent
Yeah, the draft lottery stung a little bit, but Fantilli is a stud and will do great things for our team.
Wish we had some team flairs here.
Are flairs possible in this place?
Not as far as I know. I'm hopeful it's something they add.
Another Canucks fan here. I never really participated in the reddit hockey community besides lurking around. Maybe I'll try and engage here more while there are less people around.
It doesn't look like there are too many team specific communities. It probably won't hurt to set them up now if people want. I personally think lemmy's still small enough that we'll need to put more love into the main hockey community to get it built up.
Yeah I didn't participate much on Reddit at all but I feel a bit more inclined given the size of this community. Team specific can come later if needed, just happy to find some other hockey fans!
Whenever I commented there there was a 50% chance of getting a snarky comment that really put me off most of the time. I hope this community stays positive for a while.
Go Nucks
Habs fan here, let's see how this thing work!
Well .... ๐ I moved to Canada in '88 from England, just in time to learn about ice hockey as a Flames fan the year they won the cup. A few years later the Northstars moved to Dallas after 4 straight seasons in the playoffs and I thought that was lame. I'm actually from Texas, and moved back there like a year after that, but stayed a Flames fan. I kind of dropped off from following hockey for a few years, and got back into it in my last few years of college, amid the heyday of the Stars v Avalanche playoffs rivalry. Still a Flames fan but still screw the not-the-Northstars so also an Avs fan. Then I moved to Minnesota after college in 2000, in time for the inaugural season of the Wild, so Wild fan. We crushed Dallas 6-0 in the first match-up, Dallas is allowed to have their team now. I've been back in Texas for like 20 years now, so now I'm a Stars fan (but I'll still cheer on my other 3 teams, and also Bruins, Blackhawks, and Habs). ๐ They did really build up a hockey culture in Dallas that I think helped boost availability of both youth leagues and adult rec leagues in Houston and Austin (and probably San Antonio but I never lived there). I played in rec leagues on and off, but am fully retired now due to neck problems.
Sharks fan checking in. Hoping this place starts to take off too.
