Bill Watterson actually expressed his disappointment with this strip because the fixed panel layout wasted a lot of space at the top while making the lower part very crowded. The fixed panel layout was for the benefit of newspapers who might rearrange the panels to fit their papers and often excluding the top row entirely.

He was eventually able to negotiate with his publishers to get a fixed size layout for his later Sunday strips.

I'm amazed at how well I remember this comic. I certainly haven't seen it since the 90s.

Calvin and Hobbes was a treasure. A few years ago, Berkeley Breathed did a wonderful Bloom County tribute with Watterson's permission where Opus tries to re-unite Hobbes with Calvin all these years later.

Yeah, I wish it was collected in a book. He did put out a book of strips he did the year before, so maybe there's hope. He's put out two new strips in the past week, so maybe he's waiting for more to collect.
