I would guess based on the case in the article that we will see increased levels of illiteracy and homelessness for years as an after effect of the pandemic.

There has definitely been a lot of school kids left behind during the pandemic. The gap between kids who continued their education in different ways, likely due to influence by their parents, have pulled ahead while kids whose parents didn't care have fallen behind.
