I'm a little envious of that reality, as stink badger is a solid go to insult that I don't think could ever catch on here.

In this reality in several Scandinavian countries their name is "stink animal"

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

German too.

Yeah, but think of how that reality would have to go about describing good weed.

Nip of the creature? Toke of the badger?

[-] FfaerieOxide@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Goddamnit, and you know "Honey Badger" would have been a thing someone'd breed.

[-] ComicalMayhem@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Make it your own personal insult then. Nothing wrong with having an insult in your arsenal that no one else uses.

if you subscribe to the infinite universe theory, there IS a reality where skunks are called stink badgers. There's also one where they are called Dave.

[-] gmtom@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Not necessarily. The most common mistake people make about parallel worlds is that because infinite possibilities exist then ALL possibilities must exist.

It's like how there are infinite decimal numbers between 1 and 2, but none of them are 3.

Infinities don't tend to make a lot of intuitive sense when you apply them to the world.

So do you think infinite monkeys using infinite typewriters over infinite time, wouldn't necessarily produce the works of Shakespeare? I've always been suspicious of that idea.

[-] gmtom@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Assuming the monkeys hit the keys randomly, yeah that one is mathematically provable. But the typing has to be random else it goes from definite to just incredibly likely.

So, German? Colloquially known as Stinktier, I.e. "stink animal". And used as a slight insult.

[-] Melancholia@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Let's make it happen. The name "trash pandas" has caught on for raccoons. We can do the same for skunks, which will henceforth be known as stink badgers

Alright, pact formed, new internet friend. I've got an idea. We need to convince some British people to get on board. Somewhere in the back of my brain, stink badger is only being said in a lovely British accent. I think it could lend some weight and credibility to the old stink badger mystique. People also might assume that using it could make them sound more worldly. Some cool people mentioned that there are already near approximations around Scandinavia and Germany.

Maybe giving it a little more texture and story could help us achieve our stink badger goals?

[-] Melancholia@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Okay here are my ideas.

  1. Create a community about stink badgers. Post pictures, facts, memes, and videos everyday until it catches on.
  2. Get someone with a lovely British accent to narrate a video about the wonders of the stink badger. Made the video extremely entertaining so it goes viral. I'm thinking something like the famous honey badger video, but a totally different vibe.

Fuck yes this is happening. ok, brass tacks,
-Do you want to create the magazine or should I?
-Do we pluralize or singular badger?
-Mag title formats (StinkBadger, Stinkbadger, Stink Badger) space/no space, middle caps or no?
-We co-moderate and friendship always comes before the stink badger agenda

Thoughts?

[-] Melancholia@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

You can create it and we co-moderate.
I'm thinking plural, one word, and either all lowercase or just the first letter capital. stinkbadgers or Stinkbadgers
Friendship always comes before the stink badger agenda.

I will begin collecting and producing stink badger content immediately

How did neither of us or anyone in the thread wiki this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stink_badger

I also found out American skunks are also known as polecats.

Whats our next move? I mean we still have to popularize it, but now is it a campaign to discredit the american skunk or to say that the Javan varieties are fake news badger imposters? Should we just ditch that and do a "badger is best" campaign?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mephitidae
"Mephitidae is a family of mammals comprising the skunks and stink badgers. " I propose our goal is broadening the name stink badgers to include the entire family Mephitidae and we can still proceed as planned.
