Because we took in > 1million Ukrainian refugees. It's actually a sad occurrence that our population grew, because those people were driven out of their country.

I guess this explains some of the waiting times in Ausländerbehörden and is hopefully a kick in the pants to make the whole system more efficient. I'm very glad I had help getting through it.

It also helped me understand why suddenly apartments in my city became so hard to find and rents went through the roof at the same time.
