One thing that’s missing from the current discussion is that these species evolved with a huge diversity of large herbivores for millions of years prior to the modern era. Most of these species are now gone. Did this heavy browsing pressure change the fire regime and structure of those ancient forests? It’s hard to believe they didn’t.
