The time for telling swaggering tales of white people Manifest Destiny-ing their way across the American west may have passed. It's not cool anymore to ignore the utter ruin that process left in its wake. That really limits the market for what's being sold here.

Prediction: it gets chopped up into twelve one hour parts and airs on a streaming channel.

Yup. Not sure why Costner expected not just one but four traditional Westerns to work in 2024. I don't remember the last time we had a big successful western in theaters. Django Unchained maybe?

And Django was a far cry from traditional, and only worked because of Tarantino. Costner doesn't have a comparable fan base.

Yeah, Hateful 8 only pulled 150m on a 50m budget, and that's with Tarantino's brand on it.. Westerns are a niche market, now, and it takes a shake up to the formula, like Westworld, to grab a broader audience.

I couldn't think of any either but it seems we both missed a few popular ones that are newer -

The Hateful Eight (2015)

The Revenant (2015)

Wind River (2017)

And most significantly...

Killers of The Flower Moon (2023)

I haven't seen them all and whether they are traditional westerns is up for debate, but those are the names I recognized from the Wikipedia pages.

That said, I totally agree with you and am not trying to diminish your point! There's only been like 4 big westerns since 2012 and I don't think any of them have the white hero character that OC is talking about.

Pretty sure Flower Moon was a flop.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The film is being pulled from the release calendar after Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 bit the dust in its theatrical debut late last month.

After numerous discussions, Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema made the decision to switch up their ambitious release plan in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience for the first film, which sports a $100 million price tag.

As part of that attempt, Chapter 1 will debut in the home on Premium VOD July 16 in addition to still being available to watch in theaters (the film could do notable business on PVOD).

The Horizon series marks a major gamble for Costner, who put $38 million of his own money into Chapter 1 and funded the rest with the help of two mystery investors and by selling off foreign rights.

It was an alarming debut for the $100 million movie, which was hampered by a poor B- CinemaScore and tepid reviews (it has a 43 percent critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes).

Costner is known for his confidence, but even he shocked Hollywood when he announced he would direct for the first time in decades and make four Horizon movies chronicling the great migration West during the Civil War era.

The original article contains 800 words, the summary contains 211 words. Saved 74%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
