Third-party game tools (self.linux_gaming)
submitted 3 months ago by Strayce to c/linux_gaming@lemmy.world

I'm pretty deadset on switching my Legion Go over to Bazzite (for the controller support). One of the games I play a lot of is Elite Dangerous. While I'm quite sure I can get that up and running, there's a few third-party tools I use like EDMC and Voice Attack. EDMC and the like I'm fairly sure just need to get pointed to the logfiles, but I'm not sure how well VA will operate in a Linux environment. Anyone out there dealt with anything like this? It's not a deal breaker if it just doesn't work, but I'd like to know ahead of time.

EDMC is written in python, and definitely works on linux. (At least, version 5.8 did.)

I don't know about VoiceAttack, but you might consider looking for alternatives, like maybe this one: https://github.com/stele95/LinVAM/

I haven’t dug around too much, but by searching “elite dangerous edmc linux” I found a thread about a year old about a flatpak version of EDMC.

EDIT: Just re-read your post and realized you’re mostly asking about Voice Attack. I’m not sure about that one. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Good luck, Commander! o7

I was, but that's still really useful to know.

Not sure about EDMC but Voice Attack won't (and can't) run on Linux since it runs on Windows' own voice recognition system.

Yep. I suspected something like this. Either from the voice rec or the way it emulates keypresses. Good to know, thanks!

No problem! Voice Attack was a good addition to ED but you'll get used to it I guess. :)

Separate but related topic: What controller(s) do you use?

The LeGo built-in controllers. They get a lot of shit for being weird and tbh I get it, but they suit my cartoonishly large hands. The detachable feature is pretty useful too since I can use it for Actual Work(tm) in public without getting looked at like a freak.

Steam Controller, although both of the ones I've owned have developed hardware problems. I'm dreading the day they kick the bucket and I have to switch back to a conventional controller.
