In one of the most compelling cases I can argue for the existence of lawyers as a sci-fi fan, let me introduce the 0th and 1st law of robotics

A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
