I just built my first ergo keyboard and would like some recommendations on macros and layers that you find useful. For example, I mapped backspace to the left spacebar and setup the rotary encoder, but I'll take any suggestions!

Blog post about build process and more pics.

Caps Lock is a dead key in such an important position. I personally remap it to Backspace on tap and layer on hold (though many people do Control for HHKB).

I have arrow keys under my left hand on that layer, so if I need to quickly move in an editor, instead of moving my right hand to arrow keys, it's just hold a key and tap.

I remap caps to enter so that I can quickly paste and hit enter without taking my hand off my mouse. Maybe it makes more sense to have it as backspace and ctrl-caps could be enter.

Hello fellow sinc user (rev2 here), my favorite macros I've set up is having a dedicated set of keys to swap between virtual desktops.

fancy features i enjoy a lot:

  • home row mods
  • numpad layer
  • nav layer with arrows, home, end, pg up/dn, vol/brightness controls
  • backspace on combo
  • ctrl+backspace on combo
  • del on combo
  • capsword feature
  • layer-taps on all thumb keys
  • vertical combos for parenthetical symbols (although that may not be very usable on rowstagger boards)

I find vertical combos very clunky and inconsistent on MX switches. I'm gonna try on choc but I just couldn't get then to work properly. I think if they work well for you they would be sick but just seemingly not for me (on MX).

I agree with home row mods, they're incredible. I hadn't considered a Ctrl + bs on a combo before but that seems handy. As is I just use hrm Ctrl + bs but I'll probably throw a new combo into the mix now lol

Oh they work perfectly for me :) Very keycap dependent, though! I personally use and recommend DES on MX and CS on choc (both by Pseudoku, stls for 3dp available).

I'm glad they work well for you. I'm currently on DSA on MX, and will have MBK on choc when I build it. Hopefully it works alright with the MBK caps.

MBK is a nice profile for sure! Not my personal favorite, but still totally fine for vertical combos, and it's all preference anyway :)

Keep it ergo

Posts must be of/about keyboards that have a clear delineation between the left and right halves of the keyboard, column stagger, or both. This includes one-handed (one half doesn't exist, what clearer delineation is that!?)

i.e. no regular non-split¹ row-stagger and no non-split¹ ortholinear²

¹ split meaning a separation of the halves, whether fixed in place or entirely separate, both are fine.
² ortholinear meaning keys layed out in a grid
