Be polite and don't harass people that post their games or creations. If you do not like a game, explain in a constructive way what you do like about it. Do not just reply, "This game is crap."
Promoting your own games is allowed, but do not spam the community with the same game over and over again. New updates are always welcome;
The main focus of this community are Foss games, Homebrew games, demakes and indie or one-person hobby games. Demos or tech demos are also welcome.
NSFW games are welcome as long as they are clearly marked as such.
Game mods and ROM hacks are allowed.
Feel free to share you game assets, (like from opengameart.org or itch.io

How is this community meant to be different from indie game communities? (lemmy.zip)

Okay, so I get that. I'm mostly posting small indies here, and excluding big popular ones like Celeste or Hades. I did see a lot of posts about indies in general on the pinned magazine post and I'm just wondering if this is intended to be mostly small stuff or if it is going to be another indie games in general community. If the difference is just that it allows demakes.

Also, feel free to correct me if I've totally vibe checked the magazine wrong and you have been mostly prioritizing FOSS, homebrew, demake, and one-person or small indie instead of just "any indie game ever".

My initial idea for this community was indeed to focus on FOSS, homebrew, demake, and one-person games, but then I thought that it might be too niche of a community and was not sure exactly where to draw the line at what point would an indie game would be too big for this community. So I changed my mind to allow any indie game, but I would focus more on smaller stuff with once in a while posting a bigger title. Celeste is mentioned in magazine #2 as a recommended game. I would love to see people sharing their own creations and receiving praise and/or constructive criticism from others. I also allow NSFW games to be posted here, which I think other communities do not allow.

In the future, I might also allow game mods and ROM hacks, but I have not decided yet.

If you allow or focus on any indie game including the big ones this does end up feeling too close to a general indie community for me, and then the only reason I'd be inclined to stay here instead of running to the biggest active indie game community is because I've already started here (inertia and switching costs) and because you seem to put more effort in by writing those big magazine posts and that's worth rewarding. But then I'd think "why not just post those big posts to a general indie sub and get more interaction from people?"

Of course, in the end it's your community and your life. But I do think if you do not have too many points of differentiation besides just allowing NSFW games it might be smarter to close up shop and go to a bigger, active community.

Is there any big indie community even active? The biggest I can find is on ml and last post was 4 months ago. And I prefer to avoid the ml instance.

While the differentiation is small I think it is enough for me to keep this open and the subscribers number is growing, slowly but it is growing. If in the future it I find it hard to continue I will close it and try to move my big posts elsewhere though I still would not know where. For now 21 upvotes are enough to put a smile on my face.

Ok somehow I missed that one, maybe because I searched for indie games only. For now I am not closing this community but I will see if I change my mind in the future.
