Hope this is allowed here?

Here's a really cool article in The Guardian today on Shirley Manson from the band Garbage (my favourite band, and Shirl is an absolute goddess!)

She talks about being a music icon, misogyny and hip replacements..... and they have a new album out!!

I've always loved her no bullshit down to earth approach to life ๐Ÿค˜

Also, it's really weird, but nice having an icon from my youth talking about things like hip replacements, I still think of her (and myself) as being in our 20's and indestructible, when we're now both older, peri and post menopausal, and still rocking out

I'm hoping they tour, I missed the last one

Anyone else her love Shirley and Garbage? Or PJ Harvey, Bjork, Tori?

I love all of those. My guess is we both are xenial women :) I don't know if it's the 40s and nostalgia hitting me like a truck but I've been listening to mostly music from my teens these days. I even created a community for xenials on lemmy.ca and a playlist that I keep updating whenever I remember songs that are missing. And I realize now that I didn't put any Tori Amos on there (shame on me ๐Ÿ˜…)

I'm not on Spotify, but I hope Tori Amos Professional Widow is on there ... I was mostly about clubbing music at that time, so hopefully you've got every track from Music for the Jilted Generation on there too :-P

Gen Xer! Music was so good back then lol

I was talking with my bf about this and he says music is still good now, which it it (I'm not as involved nowadays) but it's not as accessible ie in the charts and radio playlists (jesus, I'm fucking old!)

Love the playlist btw, so many great songs taking me back to being at college

She was my yearbook quote!

I was into clubbing music at that time so only periferally aware of her, but I did enjoy reading that article.

In the 90s I lived in Madchester, for the peak of Oasis, so I think that may have swayed my tastes!

I remember Madchester and clubbing *in *Manchester too! Sankeys Soap, dingy popup clubs in basements, the walls coated in sweat

I was on the fence with Oasis at the time, but appreciate them now the hype has died down, I really like Noel Gallagers High Flying Birds tho (Noel is the more talented of the two, and less of an arsehole)

Somewhere I still have a couple of fliers for club nights from those days!

I used to go to Jilly's on Thursday nights to get hammered for cheap (I didn't have a healthy relationship with such things back then), but spent most of my time on Canal St.

Oasis was always like fingernails down a blackboard to me, and still kinda is ... I'm glad they were never really popular where I live now

I've not been to Canal Street for ages, I remember the first few Pride events consisted of some male go go dancers in hot pants, dancing on the back of a low loader as it drove down the street, I couldn't afford the ticket for it today

Yes 100% allowed! She really is a blast from the past, I wanted to be her so much and I clearly remember what the album covers looked like. I'm really pleased to see her being open about aging and shit that we all go through... looks like she's still worthy of being my icon.

And I looooooveee Tori. Favourite album is little earthquakes, favourite song is crucify.

She's got a fantastic style and attitude, I still covet being ginger because of her!

I think I have most of Toris early albums, Little Earthquakes was such a definitive album for 'the pour your heart and soul out confessional' such a brutal and beautiful record!

I also love her DIY approach to pianos, how she dismantles and rebuilds them to get them to do just what she wants musically, got to love a woman who can do creative demolition

Yep and she was breaking a massive taboo talking about rape. It was HUGE

Do you ever wish there were a few more Angelfish albums?

And what's your favourite track most people wouldn't know?

[โ€“] quinacridone@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Suffocate Me, and Heartbreak to Hate are my standouts!

I read a while ago that Shirley did a solo album while on hiatus from Garbage. If I remember correctly the record label wanted to turn into a new Annie Lennox, which she objected to, and instead she served up an (unreleased) record of neo goth darkness... I would sell a kidney to have a copy of that

Ooooh hope you lemme listen if you find it!
