I ended up in the psych ward of the hospital for a week and a half some time ago. Meals were served with only a plastic spoon.

One of the meals had a baked potato. I assumed it tasted like all the rest of the food I was eating and didn’t even try.

The only utensil needed is a spoon.

I’d say knife is needed more than anything else. For all other foods, you have hands.

You can sip a soup out of a bowl.

You can pick up most small foods like rice or yogurt or pasta.

Is it the most clean? Nah. But it would work.

"The only"

Immediately lists another one.

There isn't much a fork can do that your fingers can't, only thing that comes to mind is extracting pickles. Of the western set I think it was the one we have gone longest without, and if we are including non-western utensils then give me chopsticks.

Simple fact is though it's the knife that you actually need. You might get served food that doesn't need one but that is because someone else has done all the cutting.

Spork. Knife is needed for kitchen prep though
