Believe me, I've reflected long and hard on how that could have happened. In fact after I left the company in 2015 I even spent 3 months in isolation in the Annapurna mountains in Nepal to reflect full time on exactly that ๐Ÿ˜…

The reply is more succinct.

Everything ultimately comes down to governance, rules, and culture.

If the government favors you and you can rub each others back. You'll most likely succeed. Add global surveillance, subverting local laws and rules. Then even better.

China's using the same tactic while US complains about national security. They had no problem doing the same to other countries though.
