I've always felt like this would be the ultimate FPS setup. The aiming precision of the mouse, but using analog for movement

As soon as they showed the JoyCon mouse control I was hoping there would be support for standard mice. It still doesn't do anything to steer me toward a Switch 2 over a Steam Deck, but it's an excellent move for accessibility.

I don't have a Steam Deck yet. Given the choice between that and the Switch 2, at this point, I'm still going with the Steam Deck.

It’s getting a little older but if you find a refurbished one I’d say it’s well worth it. I enjoyed mine for the last few years, just built my first Linux gaming PC because of it!

Funny you mention it, the next large purchase I have planned is a gaming PC to replace my aging 2018 laptop, and I plan on going all-in on Linux. From what I can tell, AMD seems to be the way to go, and as a long time Fedora user, I'm interested in Nobara.

What's your setup? Any recommendations?

Yeah I went AMD CPU/GPU as well. 9800x3d + 9070. Got an aorus b650 motherboard, very happy with it. Did bazzite for now, so far happy except controller support gets a little wonky when you play a game, close it, then try to play another one. Other than tiny quirks like that it has worked fantastically out the box. I haven’t even had to open the terminal yet.

Playing expedition 33 at 3440x1440p at all max settings. Consistently pulling 80fps

Yeah it's about use-case. Owning 2 handhelds from the same generation really only makes sense if you collect consoles. I didn't buy a Steam Deck because I got gifted a Switch Lite. I'm covered as far as handhelds go until there are new games I can't play. I would argue most people think this way.

You really can’t infer at all what I’m saying? Did you seriously think I was saying “people can’t play two different systems at the same time“? It feels like you’re being needlessly difficult, taking the most ridiculous interpretation of my statements and running with them then making unrelated points. It’s so typical of a bad faith online discussion. You seem to have an ax to grind about something here and keep steering towards it, I’m just saying telling somebody “don’t choose between two expensive objects, buy both!“ is out of touch and solves nothing. If they wanted/could afford both they would.

And no gaming on steam deck is much cheaper. The prices compared to switch are way, way lower. Go look at the last 10 major AAA vs. the last 10 major Nintendo IP releases and tell me what the shopping carts look like. It doesn’t even compare. Nintendo is an expensive ecosystem to get in to. you can’t even play online unless you pay another monthly/annual fee.

Your perspective is way off. It sounds like you're young, single (no kids, at least), and doing well for yourself. Which is great!

I have a pretty well-paying job, at least enough for my family and I to live comfortably. But I also have adult responsibilities, including taking care of said family. Sure, on paper, I could feasibly afford to get both, but there's no sense in getting two systems that--to my earlier point--seem to serve identical functions. Especially not when I'd also like to go out with my wife, prep a high schooler for college, help my younger child with severe special needs with everything he needs to thrive, sometimes go on vacation, do some other hobbies, responsibly maintain vehicles and things around the house, and so on. All that on top of purchasing frugally (every single piece of furniture in my living room, for example, we got secondhand for free).

So yes, it's very much an either/or decision for me, as it is for a lot of people.

On the other hand, I'll be curios how far Steam Input integration will go. Assuming these don't self-destruct every few weeks like the original Joy-cons, these might make a neat portable controller.
