Welcome to /c/birding, a community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general! Feel free to post your birding photos or just photos of birds you found in general, but please follow the rules as outlined below.

  1. This should go without saying, but please be nice to one another. No petty insults, no bigotry, no harassment, hate speech, nothing of that sort! Depending on the severity, you'll either only get your comment removed and a warning or your comment will be removed and you will be banned from /c/birding.

  2. This is a community for posting content of birds, nothing else. Please keep the posts related to birding or birds in general.

  3. When posting photos or videos that you did not take, please always credit the original photographer! Link to the original post on social media as well, if there is one.

  4. Absolutely no AI-generated content is allowed! I know it has become quite difficult to tell whether or not something is AI-generated or not, but please make sure that whatever you post is not AI-generated. If it is, your post will be removed. If you continously post AI-generated content, you'll be banned from /c/birding (but it's obviously okay if you post AI-generated stuff once or twice without knowing you did so).

  5. Please provide rough information location, if possible. This is a more loosely-enforced rule, especially because it is sometimes not possible to provide a location. But if you post a photo you took yourself, please provide a rough location and date of the sighting.

This male has been so beautifully red this year, but he is very skittish and non-assertive. His mate is much more outgoing and easy for me to catch.

I saw him pop up in the pine tree the birds all stage from to come get some peanuts from me. The jays usually beat him to them and he either flies off or is left with nothing after letting them have first shot.

He hoped around to a few branches planning his moves... And that of course got the attention of the jays there were new peanuts! ๐Ÿ˜”

I was trying to get focused on him in the tree, but he chose that moment to fly over. I quickly tried to refocus my binoculars and managed to snap this photo of his disappointment in getting nothing but empty shells once more.

Better luck next time!

This one immediately before picking up the nut came out pretty well too.

Thank you! I believe I only have the one pair, but they are both so spectacular it makes up for it. The female is actually my favorite because she is much more vibrant red than I am used to seeing in them.

Here is an older post starring her.

The first photo shows his disappointment while the second shows his optimism mere moments before.

Also both shots are gorgeous.

Thank you! I'm glad you like them.

My heart goes out to this little guy. He's so handsome and looks so bold and impressive, but he's such a wimp! ๐Ÿ˜

I'll even slingshot peanuts out right under him, but he hesitates so long that a jay or squirrel will get it, or he just gets scared off by the peanut itself!

Lady Cardinal ends up getting way more than he does, but she's still a bit nervous of the jays.

For the record, I have never in my 3 years of really watching them seen the jays pick on anyone smaller than them, just each other, crows, and the hawk.
