Players are always going to want more money, clubs are always going to have to pay it if they want to keep their best players. Good players, let alone great players are in short supply. If clubs could get away with employing kids from the local park on minimum wage they bloody well would.
Only way to lower wages is a global wage cap, which is never going to happen as it benefits some leagues to be able to outspend more attractive leagues, but in some magical universe that it did, does anybody actually expect ticket prices and tv subscription costs to come down because of it? I would rather the money went in the players pockets rather than the owners, at least the majority of players have earned it on merit rather than the backs of others, and are more likely to have come from poorer backgrounds.
A large number of games is only an issue when you trying to min max your squad size vs. player quality. Up until the recent transfer window PSG arguably had a true first eleven quality of about 12 players. Sure, they have a larger squad but how many of those appeared in matches that they were under real pressure and jeopardy?
If you have a larger squad of similar quality then rotating through them during your matches isn't a problem. When you have a small number of star players and the (significant) drop off in teams output matches them being rested, then you have a problem. Its fine when you not competing in multiple competitions but soon as you are, then you are fucked soon as you get a few injuries to key players.
Until the players unions negotiate a maximum number of games per season per player the clubs will continue to squeeze as much value as they can out of their players. As soon as the unions do, expect massive noise about a salary cap.
