I will be pulling from the ALA as well as other sources, as well as listing reasons why it was challenged or banned if I can. I've read quite a few, and I have some thoughts.

I read Venus in Furs after I learned where the word masochism comes from, and that sent me down this path of reading a bunch of banned books to see what the big deal was. The only books I think should be banned are ones which are poorly written, but there are a lot of those.

Great book! I also read some De Sade after Venus. He's a great author too but boy howdy, his concepts are intense.
