I've been using Openboard as my keyboard since 2020, and I'm pleased with it. However, I've noticed that the latest update was back in August 2022. Does this mean it's deprecated?

Are there any other simple FOSS Android keyboards that you have experience with and can recommend? I'd love to hear it!

Edit: my current keyboard https://github.com/openboard-team/openboard

Yes, there is FOSS keyboard I can recommend.

Florisboard

Florisboard is FOSS and it has a lot of customization.

I don't have to think about the keyboard, because it just feels right.

As for language customization, it also had the layout for my language (Finnish) so that's cool.

The link is for github, you can get it with Obtainium or from Fdroid.

Also, you can check if the Openboard has a lot of open issues on github, if it does, it might be deprecated.

Seems like FlorisBoard is suggested a lot! Will try this one out, however I do hope Openboard will survive but looks like there are many open issues. Thanks for your tip!

I'm now trying FlorisBoard because of this. I'm quite happy with OpenBoard but the fact it doesn't seem to be maintained anymore makes me look for alternatives. So far so good, but as a dyslect I hope it get's the prediction does come soon 😅.

I use FlorisBoard, it's more customizable than OpenBoard and works pretty well, although there hasn't been a release in a while (the project is still active though).

Simple keyboard is also an option, although I haven't used it

The dev is working on a pretty big update to introduce text prediction afaik and the newest beta should be available soon (TM). So I am quite looking forward to it!

Cool, that's what I wanted to hear! I'll look into Florisboard! Thank you for your feedback.

The most hyped I've been in a while for a relatively innocuous software update.

Thank you for your feedback! Since FlorisBoard didn't have recent releases, it kind of felt like I was in the same situation as I am now. But I just read there is a big update upcoming, which is fantastic! Will try FlorisBoard out!

But AnySoftKeyboard also hasn't been updated since January 2022, so I don't think that that really improves the situation when switching from OpenBoard.

AnySoftKeyboard Canary (the beta) was updated in March 2023. While I'm hopeful for some of the FOSS keyboards mentioned by others, for the time being I find AnySoftKeyboard to still be the most complete FOSS alternative to proprietary boards.

Oh I didn't know that. That's good news then!

Any good recommendations for FOSS keyboards with Swype-like functionality? Literally the only thing keeping me attached to GBoard..

[-] arch_linux_user@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

Yeah the swipe and multi-lingual input is the only thing keeping me on GBoard. I would love to not have all my keyboard interractions be recorded but... yeah these features are just too good to pass on

[-] amanneedsamaid@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

Florisboard has a swipe feature, it's pretty early in development and definitely not perfect but it gets the job done for me!

While waiting for Florisboard to take the next step, I've been very happily using: OpenBoard with gesture typing since the lack gesture typing was holding me back from enjoying Openboard.
