One Israeli objective of its military campaign in the Gaza Strip is to end Israel's responsibility over the Palestinian coastal enclave, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Friday.

"The third phase will require the removal of Israel’s responsibility for life in the Gaza strip, and the establishment of a new security reality for the citizens of Israel," the minister said, according to a statement from his office.

I'm curious what exactly this means. Last time Israel gave Gaza more autonomy it allowed for this attack to occur, so do they want to depose Hamas then do some nation-building before they leave? I can't imagine they'd be allowed to remain in power. Maybe they want to Install the PNA as the government in Gaza before giving it autonomy? I suppose if Gaza were a sovereign nation Israel would be able to counter-attack without being accused of misdeeds against an occupied territory. Perhaps they talked Egypt into taking it back? Maybe they're just going to blow the place to hell then leave it to its own devices? That would presumably mean whoever is left of Hamas takes back control, or Fatah.
