I love the growth and population, but I really want to help foster the decentralization of this platform, since that’s (to me) the best part of the fediverse.

Other than simply spinning up a new instance, have you decided on instances to block? A focus for your instance? What type of community do you want to foster?

I'm with /u/derek@lemmy.one and /u/svengarlic@lemmy.world here.

Spinning up an instance for yourself and maybe a few friends? Yeah, that's no sweat.

Be ready to be a full-fledged admin if you open it up to everyone. If you're cool with that, awesome. To increase the chances that it'll be interesting to people, you should give it a description & name to attract the kinds of people you're more likely to vibe with. Just took a quick look at your post history and saw scifi and creative posts, maybe lean into that. Or whatever you're into.

Poptalk is a great example of a "themed" instance. We need more of those and less "Leddit 2.0" instances, imho.

Are you ready to moderate content on it and block users, who act inapropriate? Because that's how your whole instance can be banned on popular ones.

Thanks for the advice here, folks.

I’ve got a technical roadblock getting my instance installed, and with stress at my job (of course also considering valid concerns raised here), I am not going to pursue running a fediverse instance at this point in time.
