Great, welcome to The Website™
FWIW I'd be interested in discussing hosting them on startrek.website if anyone here has a connect.
I really considered something like tos.
, prequel.
or even just reddit.
but "old" gets the point across best.
Watching Star Trek counts as self reflection and growth, right? ...right?
Things may be uh- crispy for a few hours while we get re-Federated and all the other instances whallop us with traffic. It should pass within a day.
True, but following the instance directly can be a bit of a firehose of information since you get ALL posts and comments. We wanted to have a place to alert for scheduled maintenance, events, and stuff like that.
Just a quick update for everyone, yes OP is right and a bunch of bots signed up. We've purged them from our user count and enabled CAPTCHA. Email verification is coming soon as a secondary deterrent.
For the record nobody told us that it's not safe out here. We were aware that self-hosting was wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but has NO IDEA that it wasn't for the timid. 😉
Thanks for the heads up, StarTrek.website has enabled CAPTCHA and purged the bots from our database.
You are correct. The server runs Linux, and Lemmy is software running on that server. The URL (startrek.website) points to the server's IP. There's no requirement for the URL to be called "Lemmy", that's just what a lot of people do. Also I don't think .Lemmy is an available option, though that would be cool.
The only perk we had in mind thus far was some user flair (whenever that inevitably gets invented). But you make a great point. Still getting used to this egalitarian perspective.
Counselor, I am happy to read this... and yet I am crying. Perhaps my emotion chip is malfunctioning? (thank you so much🖖)
