This is pretty much me with Fedi. Can't hold hobbies to save my life. Pretty sure I've dropped one tonight. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I've been here for almost a year and half now. There's been ups and downs but I've always been here and will continue to be here until this place isn't.๐Ÿซถ

Seems like the new Mastodon version is a must skip for those of us who like actual information about notifications...๐Ÿ˜’

Soo that's what I'll be doing. Skipping it.

Still looking for an alternative that doesn't require Linus Torvalds to personally come to your house and install it himself, but that's currently not a thing. Need Linus Torvalds or the equivalent for pretty much everything.๐Ÿ˜ฉ

It sure would be nice to have some automated reporting by keywords right about now....you know, the thing I was explicitly told was NOT gonna happen...๐Ÿคฌ

I've been using Saturn for iOS for a bit now and ever since the most recent updates, it seems very enjoyable.

It has most of the same features as other third party Mastodon apps, but with its own look and feel.

I think the only thing that could make it better for me, would be if it had a "Hashtag Drawer" type feature for the composer so that I could save individual hashtags with CamelCase for re-use.

It's something I've been wanting in a Fediverse app for SO long.

But if you want a new app to mess around with, Saturn is very good from what I've seen with it.๐Ÿ‘

Ugh. Threads keeps adding Fediverse features that are only benefitting themselves.

They can now see our usernames if we follow them and if we like their posts.

Still can't mention us or follow us back...which is the main part that's keeping their integration from being functional.๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I just want open communication across platforms dammit. It's not that hard. It doesn't take a whole year. One man did it for a platform that he doesn't even work for, in just a few months!

About to give Saturn another go for a few days hopefully.

The dev has removed the post limit for free users, which is definitely good.

Paying to post on Fediverse where everywhere else is free, is wild.

They also said they fixed the crash bug with notifications. Those two things immediately killed my motivation with wanting to use the app so hopefully it's better this time.๐Ÿคž

Maybe I should deactivate my sub.club

I don't have anything "exclusive" I want to post there.

I'm not a "content creator", I just like Fediverse and tend to ramble about it and like to try out new projects sometimes.

I would like to earn a little on Fediverse, but so far I don't think I've done anything worth earning.๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

There's something I've been wanting to talk about for awhile.

Quote posts, limiting of quote posts, and how those features might be added to core AP.

As it is now, the way Threads does quote posting is when a person adds a link to another Threads post, it automatically turns into a "quote post".

They also have the option to limit posts from being quoted, which in turn completely stops anyone on Threads linking to that post.

To me, that is wild, but I can see it making sense on a closed platform.

However, given the way Fediverse works and a ton of people have their own instance/website, I think it would be absolutely asinine to attempt to stop someone from simply posting a link to another post.

Links have been part of the internet for awhile now and there's no other platform that stops people from using links, AFAIK.

So, to those working on AP, please consider another route for quote posts because if I cannot link to something on my own website, I'll be pretty livid honestly.

Well...after a few posts using Saturn, it prompted me to pay...

Guess my trial period is over in less than 2 hours.

Not much to say tbh, since I didn't get a fair amount of time with it.

Notifications crash the app, that's about all I can say....๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@JPEGuin@mastodon.social, I would definitely remove the limit on posting. I'm a poster, if I can't post without paying, I'll use something else.

Also, the app crashed several times in the short time I've had with it. The most consistent being when I tried to open my notifications, it crashed every time.

Overall, I can't say much more because I was very limited by the paywall.๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I am testing out Saturn, an iOS app for Mastodon, at the request of the developer.

After I give it a week or so of messing around in the app, I'll give my thoughts about it.

Hopefully it's good, we can use more apps with different styles and features.

Many options are always a good thing to me.

Told y'all mastodon being the majority here is not a good thing....

Kinda weird seeing some people on Threads say "I'm sharing to the Fediverse!" but they're totally not...๐Ÿ˜ณ

That's the major issue with Threads implementation.

People just assume posting there by default is "on the Fediverse".

@mark thank you for the compliment and assurance friend.

I am always self conscious about my long winded replies because sometimes even I wouldn't wanna read a post that long.

Though, with topics like this that I'm very passionate about, I feel it's very important to lay out all the information and knowledge I have so that others can make informed decisions themselves based on the most important details.

I discuss Fediverse and networks like it, literally constantly and there's LOTS of nuances with these systems that need lots of explanations.

@Blaze no problem, friend.

I always worry if my long winded answers make sense to neurotypical people as I'm ADHD and slightly autistic.๐Ÿ˜…

So I hope it does make sense, at least even partially.

Overall, they're mostly centralized because there's *very* few relays and they're required infrastructure, but decentralized in other ways, which may or may not matter in the bigger picture because of this previous information.

@Blaze

Long winded, nuanced answer, ready your eyeballs:

It's a bit complicated, but since we're on Fediverse and at least somewhat familiar with how things work here, I'll try to explain with that comparison in mind.

On Fediverse, instances are in control of the user data directly. To "migrate" your account, you'd be switching instances and admins entirely.

BlueSky splits things up quite a bit more.

There, you can host your own "PDS" or Personal Data Server. That hosts your account and post info only.

Then, there's the "AppView". In comparison to Fediverse, these are like Lemmy, Mastodon, Mbin, etc. Right now, there's VERY few Appviews to choose from.

Then, there's the "relay". Which to Fediverse, the only thing similar is also relays, but they work differently. On BlueSky, they relay every post and interactions of all the PDS data that connect to AppViews. I do not think there's a choice on *what* is relayed, just a huge firehose. That being said, they're not optional like Fediverse. To complete the network, relays are required on ATProto and apparently could be expensive to host, so right now, it appears the only relay is hosted by BlueSky the company. Which makes things slightly centralized.

Now, that we have those definitions out of the way, this is where things get a bit muddy and a bit of purposeful corporate created confusion for purpose of selfishness is quite apparent.

Right now, there's very few AppViews. The ones I'm aware of are, BlueSky itself, Whitewind, and Frontpage.xyz.

The confusion happens because BlueSky, the company, doesn't separate the fact that accounts hosted on self-hosted PDS, aren't technically Bluesky accounts, they're ATproto accounts. Everywhere you look to login, it says "login using your BlueSky account". I can only assume they're doing this on purpose so that anyone who tries to make an Appview, host a PDS, AND a relay, can't have their own "identity" like different instances and platforms have here on Fedi.

That will confuse people and make them think *everything* is just hosted by BlueSky the company. However, as we've now established, there's definitely a separation of "Bluesky" the company, "BlueSky" the AppView that you can login to using your "BlueSky" account, which doesnt technically have to be hosted by anything related to BlueSky.

I hope this all makes sense and you can tell that *technically* things are decentralized for the most part. It's just that BlueSky is purposefully muddying their own definitions of things so that anyone that tries to build on ATproto, has a hard time making themselves known as *not* bluesky due to the way they conflate all these definitions.

Sorry for the huge post and hope it makes sense in some way.

Thanks for reading.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

@Fitik and Fediverse only gained a few thousand.

We're losing because of the lack of moderation tools.

People don't always want to be a part of the moderation process. Matter of fact, I'd say most don't.

Therefore, people will just block and mute, and if it keeps happening, they'll leave.

If user reports continue to be the only way for moderation to happen, Fedi fails.

I've been beating this drum for almost a year and it really feels like it's never going to get fixed, unfortunately.๐Ÿ˜”

@dch82 first, "normies" have to not get harassed when they come here.

Unfortunately the biggest Fedi software refuses to add automated reporting of offensive posts so if it's not reported, the admins won't even see it.

People coming from corporate social media are used to ignoring the report button because in their experience, it either doesn't work, or gets ignored by admins anyway.

We need automated reporting.

@Fitik yep, there's literally no excuse to be on a chromium based browser now.

You want your information to be sold? Use chrome.

You want to use the internet? Use literally anything else.
