This happened to my friends. They bought tickets, the flight got cancelled, they never got informed, they continued to get regular flight reminders, including a week before the "flight" and a reminder the night before to check in. They chose not to check in online, went to the airport, and were told at the check in desk that the flight didn't exist. Not just the flight, the route. The route they were flying no longer existed, and they still got notifications. Ridiculous.

Oh, and the kicker... they got emails afterwards asking them to rate the flight!

Agreed, but also eye-witness testimony is notoriously inaccurate.

PP trying to frame income/property-value disparity as a purely Canadian problem that has only happened under Trudeau is just pure fallacy. It's happening in countries all over the world and it has been growing under every government in Canada for decades.

Usenet requires paying for a service though, right?

[-] Johnnypneumoniac@lemmy.one 16 points 1 year ago

Yes, but, money isn't everything. I once left a high paying job in the US to come back to Canada, get paid less, and be way happier.

Working for a US company and living in Canada is a good way to go, but is harder to swing if you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Plus it sounds like the people they're talking about in this scenario may have their H1-B revoked and they wouldn't have a job or a visa to stay in the US at all. Canada, even with a lower paying job seems like a good option.

Whoa... TruckBC. Now my feed feels like home.

This is pretty nuts! I've been in the dark all day so this is the first I'm hearing of it. That's some epic damage.

I saw some articles this morning saying the aurora might be visible starting last (Friday) night, and maybe through the weekend. Just wondering if anyone had success to help me decide if I'll try to see them tonight (since it will have to be quite late.)

My thoughts are that the title should be relevant.

One fun post to try to make up for the downers...

"The school board says Beattie has decided to take medical leave. According to school board chair Maya Russell the board does not have the ability to remove a trustee in this case under the School Act, but are requesting she resign immediately."

Does she think she will be able to come back to her job after this?

Even the government is bigger in Texas.

I want it to hurt them. I want it to fail. But I fear they're doing this now because they've run the numbers and are pretty sure the vocal minority that will leave permanently won't be noticed in a month.

I've typed and deleted a bunch of comments on Reddit the last few days. I will no longer participate. I will only use old reddit or rss feeds and consume it.

I've noticed this in many places in the Lemmyverse in my first few days here. When first signing up almost all the instances were listed as having 2 or less active users. The biggest was Lemmy.ml at something around 1000. Then I've seen those numbers listed in other places including a post yesterday that is supposed to help bring redditors to Lemmy.

These numbers will just get most people to turn around and not even consider Lemmy as an alternative.

I saw a GIF today showing the growth of user accounts on Lemmy instances and Lemmy.ml (for example) was over 30000 and many of the other servers were in the 100s, approaching 1000. That's a HUGE difference and indicates a community that is 10 times (or more) more active than the initial numbers presented indicate.

Any thoughts? Am I out to lunch?

As I'm posting things, I'd like to avoid reposting stuff. But it's hard to tell if right now if I am, especially in more active communities, because I have to scroll through the existing posts manually.

I'm being a lot more active here than I was on Reddit. Trying to make sure it feels like a dynamic space for new redfugees :)

It's built on a reservoir so I assume that means waves aren't an issue. I was glad to see it was a reservoir and not a natural lake or ocean. It means there shouldn't be any (?) environmental impact.

I also wonder if it is beneficial for reducing evaporation.

There's a bit more detailed info in the press release from last year about the start of the project. It's on the website linked in the article.
