Probably not based on logic, but rather on a desire to move from single-player games (with a high investment cost, risky return depending on how well it sells and inherently limited overall return) to GaaS (where they can continue to milk the cow for years).

I suspect they are hoping they can convince single player game fans (like me) to get on board with this, which seems totally unhinged and unrealistic to me.

Battlefield Earth. The book was pretty good, not really a classic by any stretch, but the movie was an absolute trash fire.
