The buzz out of the Code Conference this week is, naturally, all about the disastrous performance of X / Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino, who closed out the two-day affair in spectacular fashion. Vox’s Peter Kafka, who has been going to the conference since it started in 2008, called it “the weirdest session I’ve ever seen.” If I had to sum up the vibe as everyone trickled off to dinner afterward, it would be stunned disbelief. As for Yaccarino, she immediately fled the premises with her six-person security detail.

After three years, a Washington, DC, judge will hear the Department of Justice’s potentially landmark antitrust case against Google. The department alleges Google struck anticompetitive deals with Apple and other companies for prime placement of its search engine, while Google contends its dominant market share is the result of a superior product. It’s the biggest tech antitrust trial since the US took on Microsoft in the 1990s: 10 weeks that could tip the balance of power online.

DENVER (AP) — Attorneys for former President Donald Trump argue that an attempt to bar him from the 2024 ballot under a rarely used “insurrection” clause of the Constitution should be dismissed as a violation of his freedom of speech.

The lawyers made the argument in a filing posted Monday by a Colorado court in the most significant of a series of challenges to Trump’s candidacy under the Civil War-era clause in the 14th Amendment. The challenges rest on Trump’s attempts to overturn his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden and his role leading up to the violent Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“At no time do Petitioners argue that President Trump did anything other than engage in either speaking or refusing to speak for their argument that he engaged in the purported insurrection,” wrote attorney Geoffrey Blue.

Trump also will argue that the clause doesn’t apply to him because “the Fourteenth Amendment applies to one who ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion,’ not one who only ‘instigated’ any action,” Blue wrote.

COSTA DA CAPARICA, Portugal (AP) — Sofia Oliveira was 12 years old when catastrophic wildfires in central Portugal killed more than 100 people in 2017. She “felt it was now or never to raise our voices” as her country appeared to be in the grip of deadly human-caused climate change.

One of the big winners of the Unity debacle is the free and open source Godot Engine, which has seen its funding soar to a much more impressive level as Unity basically gave them free advertising.

Did it stop you smoking? If so, then yes it worked.

Every 10% increase in cigarette tax results a 4% reduction in consumption among adults, and a 7% decrease amongst youth. Source

A lot of Catholic nuns in the U.S. don't typically wear a habit. They wear conservative clothing (usually a skirt, and blouse) with a veil. Habits are reserved for some orders and may be required, however membership in those orders are entirely voluntary.

A lot of nuns actually wear plain clothes as well. There's a lot of choice involved, and YMMV depending upon what order the nun maintains membership.

That's an interesting metric. Apparently the vitriol for Discovery is mostly contained to the internet.

This comes as no shock at all.

Literally translates to "Time Portal." Yeah that was hilarious.

Sean didn't mention La'an's timing in the shuttle when she catches Boimler and Mariner in the shuttle just after she says "I never get caught." That was really funny as well.

Honestly there's just so much in this episode, that even after several viewings I'm sure you'd still be picking out small references and easter eggs here and there.

The most XO thing that Una has done throughout the entire series run is question junior officers about Enterprise Bingo.

Seriously though as a former sailor I can verify that an XO's job is tedious and boring. It's all paperwork, inspections, and disciplinary crap outside of Captain's Mast (yet an XO does most the work for that before a CO sees anything). The bulk of Una storytelling that we've seen is pretty great. Ortega is the one who needs to shine at this point. She hasn't had much story development.

I disagree. I really enjoy this show and I can give the writers some creative license as a prequel for a show that's almost sixty years old.

Spock has to have a moment of crisis that brings him to the state of character he's in in TOS. I think there's plenty of room to breathe over the course of the show to allow that. I haven't watched The Cage in several years, so I don't exactly recall, however from what I do recall, Spock shows a lot more emotion in the pilot vs. the beginning of the series with Kirk.

The Inner Light is by far my favorite episode. Jean-Luc is visibly changed after his experience.

TIL it is Patrick Stewart's favorite episode of the series.

There's some real fallout from it though. I ditched Twitter probably a decade ago, as soon as I picked up Reddit, honestly. But I do have a friend of mine that's an author, and Twitter has been instrumental in promoting his books and establishing his fan community. There are so many people like that, and for their sake it's a damn shame Musk has decimated Twitter.

That seems to be the case. Ditch IG and let them come to Fedi instead. There's room for sex positive people, positively.

EDIT

Yet this is also another casualty of shittification, so what would we expect? Meta is all over the place with their moderation. I still have a FB account and occasionally I'll receive warnings for posts I made 5-10 years ago. No link to the post, no arguments, no real recourse. While I kind of don't care, a part of me does. I wonder what innocuous thing someone at FB didn't like on my friends only visible account (which probably really isn't that way because FB sucks).

OMFG what a fucking bozo. So what he's proposing (among other very dumb things...literally) is an energy infrastructure like Texas. That'll go over real well.
