A king till the very end. A hero who went out with a blast. In a word: based.

Now I finally understand the reasons behind the Russian invasion.

  1. I'd say the suggested practice is going with smaller instances (i.e. anything that isn't lemmy.ml or even worse lemmy.world). But sure, if you want to spin up a custom instance that would be even better. You'd have the advantage of being able to customize your experience a lot more (changing themes, editing the code to fix stuff you don't like, managing your own emojis...)

  2. I'd say around 10€ a month. My instance pays around that (maybe a little more, can't remember) and we have over 100 users. It's really not that expensive.

  3. You become a mega janny. You have to draft server wide rules, appoint mods and make sure they don't screw up by letting banned content through. Depending on your country's laws and where your instance is hosted, you might risk hosting illegal stuff for which you as an admin would be liable.

Others have already replied to 4. and 5. so I'm not going to make this wall of text any longer.

Fun fact: while not being exactly like what karma was on Reddit, Lemmy does store the total count of upvotes-downvotes your account has received. You probably can't see it because it isn't shown by the frontend (the website you see), but the data is indeed there.

LMAO this game is amazing. I got to rule 25 with this bad boy

Semplice1!2711shellJanuaryV🥚Sixngxctract🌔norway2004Qxb7+🏋️‍♂️🏋️‍♂️🏋️‍♂️VIIamloved🐛🐛🐛🐛https://youtu.be/QfUYWkPNDqU

but fucking Paul starved as I was converting all the vowels to bold. If anyone's wondering why there's a link in there, rule 24 required you to put the URL of a YT video with a duration of exactly 11 minutes and four seconds. Will probably be different for you, if you try it.

Upvoting this post from Connect for Lemmy. Actually I think I still prefer Jerboa. Unfortunately it has stopped working since I updated my instance to 0.18 so this will have to do for now.

Regular firefox with enhanced protection on by default + ublock origin does most of the work for me. Personally I also like to add a user agent switcher on top of it. Oh and the Facebook container extension, that one is a must.

Why does it not work? Why not, you stupid bastard?

[-] Nerd02@forum.basedcount.com 8 points 1 year ago

Not sure if there's any lore behind it but I've also seen this. The beehaw admins seem to have an habit of making problems go away by pressing the magic button.

[-] Nerd02@forum.basedcount.com 15 points 1 year ago

My team and I are planning to start working on an AutoMod bot in the near future. It's going to be built with our custom instance in mind, but the code will he open source for everyone to use.

If I'm actively subscribed do I still get the content [...]?

No, the whole point of defed is that your home instance stops "listening" to the updates of the defederated instance. So you'd stop getting updates from any community hosted on @sh.itjust.works period.

[-] Nerd02@forum.basedcount.com 13 points 1 year ago

This. Defed is not the magic weapon that will solve all your problems. Captcha and email filters should be on by default though.

[-] Nerd02@forum.basedcount.com 32 points 1 year ago

Agreed. Sh.itjust.works has plenty of interesting communities, pressing the big red button for just one name seems a bit overkill.
