Since this intance is apparently being shut down in several days, I'll sign off with this crosspost

yeah, not pleased about this as somebody who set up shop to start a community or two which goes against the current shitlib hivemind consensus 🤷

oh that's interesting, I didn't know about that, thanks!

The newly exposed documents include full emails and pages of Slack chats that were cropped for the report, exposing the “Proximal Origin” authors’ real-time thinking. [...]

Much of Tuesday’s hearing focused on a critical few days in early February 2020, beginning with a conference call February 1 that included the eventual authors of the paper and Drs. Anthony Fauci, then head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Francis Collins, then head of its parent agency, the National Institutes of Health. Later minutes showed that the consensus among the experts leaned toward a lab escape. Yet within days, they were circulating a draft — including to Fauci and Collins — that came to the opposite conclusion, the first draft of which had been finished the same day of the conference call. How and why that rapid turnaround occurred has been the subject of much debate and interrogation.

The authors have said, and repeated during Tuesday’s hearing, that new data had changed their minds, but the new Slack messages and emails show that their initial inclination toward a lab escape remained long past that time.

Hi folks, does anyone know of other Lemmy instances which allow questioning the orthodoxy of Both Sides™ subject to basic ground rules of civility / good-faith discussion / non edgelording, which don't have a ton of instances blocking them (being blocked by the most hyper "woke" instances is fine)??

This instance is fine and I have no issues with it BTW, I'm just trying to see if there are any other instances run from what I'd call a "classical liberal" free speech perspective, where having unpopular or bad opinions is allowed as long as one is not being a dickhead about it. And if so, if those instances are also blocked by a ton of others, or just by the few I'd definitely expect.

To get a little more specific, since a number of big Lemmy instances seem to follow American "progressive" orthodoxy lock stock & barrel, what I am looking to find is instances where a user (or a community!) won't get immediately shitcanned for:

  • not being 100% on board with race & racial oppression being the root of all ills in society
  • not being 100% on board with Drag Queen Story Time
  • not being 100% on board with abolition of borders
  • not being 100% on board with letting violent criminals roam free because equity
  • and so on

It's fine if the instance is left-aligned / leftish, as long as actual discussion is not censored due to DEI buzzword concepts.

Hey, so, I don't consider myself a commie per se (in part because I haven't done the required reading and thus can't converse intelligently about communism with any degree of true nuance) but I'm probably what would be considered very far left by USA standards, while still being, shall we say skeptical of shit like Drag Queen Story Hour.

I started this community because like you, Stupidpol was the biggest thing I missed about reddit. I'm assuming if this community gains any steam and people who actually started the sub start migrating, I'll be able to figure out how to hand it over to some of the existing mods.

“If the minimum wage had continued to go up in step with productivity, it would now be not $7.25 but about $25 an hour. A recent RAND study found that if the U.S. had remained as equitable as it was in 1975 for the next 43 years through 2018, the bottom 90 percent of Americans would have earned an extra $47 trillion. Instead that money flowed in a great flood to the top.”

nah I'm just copying & pasting the links

It's probably also worth pointing out that the original subreddit is mainly intended for Marxists, but people of all persuasions are allowed to discuss as long as they aren't too disruptive.

That could probably fit within the orbit. I updated the sidebar with a more or less direct copy of the one at r/stupidpol so it's a bit easier to gauge for people wandering in.

I'm not a mod on that sub, just trying to set up a Lemmy instance of the community on a server where it won't get immediately banned for questioning dominant paradiggums in a non-malicious way.

Until this community gets a few users, I will irregularly lift stories from the Reddit sub and post them here. If others want to do the same, that'd be great. There's only so much time in the day.
