We've been listed as a flawed democracy by the Economic Democracy Index for a decade, so it's been a while since it's been purported as well.
Not sure why I was so vague in my original comment. The moment US democracy died was Citizens United.
US hasn't been a bastion of democracy since the fall of the USSR. Probably wasn't before then.
