It's more accurate to say that the British prevented either themselves (through inaction) or China (by treaty/law) from having any practical control. If you'd bother to read the wiki article OP linked you'd know. China should have had jurisdication, but Britain techincally had (imperialist) jurisdication. The result was a no-man's land until Britain finally gave up.

EDIT: missed a word

What the fuck are you talking about? In actual reality it was a product of capitalism. Specifically British imperialist capitalism in China. It took until the mid 80’s (40 years after the Communists came to power) for the British to allow China to have control over the area and it was turned in to a park less than a decade later, clearly indicating that the Communists were in no way interested in continuing the existence of the dystopian walled city.

They may be known mostly as a ska band, but this song is pop punk through and through. IMO one of the best pop punk jams ever written, though I acknowledge that’s probably a red hot take lol

Apparently Anti-Flag broke up last week (missed that news somehow) after allegations of rape were made against an unnamed lead singer of a political punk band on the enough podcast. Based on details in the victim's story, people quickly pointed at Anti-Flag's Justin Sane as the culprit.

Not helping his image was the fact that he nuked all of his and Anti-Flag's social media and announced the band's breakup on Patreon shortly after the podcast episode dropped.

A good breakdown from a Reddit comment by /u/chawth:

Circumstantially, her story seem to point to with Justin Sane.

Rapist in question was the singer in an active political punk band she saw in Brooklyn. She's young, so was recent or relatively recent She met the singer in question after the show and they shared numbers because he would be "in her area for a film festival about political activism by musicians"

There was a 2010 documentary called Sounds Like a Revolution that Justin Sane was featured in, including other punk luminaries like Jello Biafra, Fat Mike and Henry Rollins. I don't think any of these other punk vocalists would qualify as being in an active political punk band at that time The website for this documentary shows that it was a selection at the Woodstock Film Festival, which is one town over from where this woman lives and/or works (quick google search, no creepiness involved) She claimed the singer is straight edge (or was, as drinks feature in the story)

The rapist's angle was to get her alone by saying he just made a recording with Billy Bragg. I haven't paid attention to Anti-Flag in over 20 yrs, so I don't know if this corroborates anything, or if it was even just a ruse to get her alone.

She also said this happened with she was 21 or 22 (I think). Her LinkedIn points to her graduating college in 2010, which lines up age-wise with the release of the documentary above.

/u/Friendly_Law9818 adds detail around the first point, confirming that Anti-Flag had a show in Brooklyn in Sept 2020, aligning with the general timeline of the rest of the story

In addition, Anti-Flag played Brooklyn in Sept 2010. Woodstock Film Festival was held shortly after, Justin attended because of the film, and he was on a talk panel and did a performance.

Additional info on the Billy Bragg bit from /u/chinsedentist:

Anti-Flag played the Harvest of Hope Fest 3/13/2010 with Billy Bragg and performed at least two songs on stage together including covers Police On My Back and Should I Stay Or Should I Go. The accused may have been talking about footage or a board recording of that performance and not necessarily an unreleased studio recording. Video here: https://youtu.be/ZGBsU0TNfy8 and https://youtu.be/JBkYXpNoZrI

This at least establishes some form of collaboration between Bragg and Justin Sane that year. If it was a studio recording, I wonder if it was the songs Sane released solo as the Gas Land Terror 7" in 2011. There are no credits listed on the art for that so who knows if Bragg helped in some way. Or it could also be something unreleased or not yet identified.

In my view a totally overlooked jam from some pop punk pioneers.

Saw these guys live a few years back and they killed it. I think the future of pop punk is in good hands.

Was lucky enough to see this live last year at Riot Fest in Chicago. MCR put on a great show, even if the crowd was a tad out of control (and not in a normal, good, fun, moshing way).

1

Wasn't in love with this song the first time I heard it, but it's really grown on me. Especially after seeing it live last summer.

2

Got in to Fucked Up through “David Comes to Life”. Recently picked up the comp of their early stuff (“Epics in Minutes”) for half price at a record pop-up, and holy fuck is there some good stuff on there!

1

Descendents out here still putting out great records after 40 years. As much as I love other bands from the same era, Descendents might be the only one where I don’t find myself thinking “please don’t put out another album”.

For real, who seriously had the thought “you know what, we need another adaptation of that one book from decades ago. We could try adapting some of that guy’s other work, but why bother? I know we tried the goofy, fun spin and the dark, gritty spin, but I’m sure we missed an angle on that one kid’s book.”

More importantly how did the guy who had that thought not get kicked out of the pitch meeting immediately?

1

Definitely the best (only?) song anyone’s ever written about their horny grandparents getting it on during the Holocaust.

5

Been a fan of these guys for a while but never had a chance to see them live. Luckily I get to fix that later this summer when they come around with Bad Cop/Bad Cop (another great band with an A+ band name).

I've done VIP in the past and can only recommend it with caveats. It's probably not worth the price unless you're really going to use the in/out privileges or consider AC bathrooms a must (as opposed to port-a-potties in GA). There's not necessarily a ton in the area, so I've never personally used the in/out privileges. The AC bathrooms are great, but I've never really been bothered by using the port-a-potties (although they can get very hot if it's a hot day). The other main perk of VIP is that there is a large tent set up for extra shade. There's some shade in GA, but it's limited and tends to get crowded if it's a hot day. The VIP bars/food booths aren't really worth it imo (I got food faster in GA last year and the best bar is a beer tent in GA imo).

That being said, highly recommend going to Riot Fest. This will be my fourth or fifth year and I always have a great time. I especially love that it's a music-first festival as opposed to the more social media influencer or drug/rave culture festivals.

“Who controls the past now controls the future. Who controls the present now controls the past.” - “Testify”, Rage Against the Machine (also Orwell in 1984, but I wanted to mention the RATM song since it slaps so hard)

Saying that these places are socialist isn’t gonna work because these people don’t know what that word means either.

True. Exactly why these people need to shut up until they read more (or any) theory lol

Anyway, you can argue that these countries are communist because they’re working to build communism, the same way that a communist party is communist.

Indeed, good point. I do think it ought to be an educational priority to get people to understand and more commonly use this definition of "communist" as opposed to the "classless, moneyless" definition.

[-] TheBucklessProphet@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

True, fair points. When I see the "real communism has never been tried" type statements, my head tends to get stuck on the definition being used by the person making the statement (i.e. as the classless, moneyless society). I do, however, recognize and stand behind the definition you're pointing out.

The quotes you've provided illustrate perfectly the value of reading theory.

[-] TheBucklessProphet@lemmy.world 29 points 1 year ago

I think part of the problem is that most people (including self-professed socialists and communists) don’t read any theory.

AES isn’t communism, that’s kind of the point. Socialism is the next stage on the road to the theorized end stage that is communism. Communism will never sustainably be the organization of society 5 minutes (or even 5 years or probably 5 decades) after the revolution. That shit takes time and a lot of work, and AES systems were/are the attempts at doing the necessary work to reorganize society and eliminate the bourgeoise and their influence through socialist (as opposed to capitalist) proletarianization.

Same boat here. The thing is, though, that I think being a Marxist communist is (in a way) just as punk as being an anarchist. I think it comes down to different interpretations of what the punk ethos even is. Anarchists tend to cling strongly to anti-authority as a universal, but I’m with them in being anti bourgeois authority. However, I do believe in the authority of the proletariat. That is, of freeing workers from our chains and allowing ourselves to organize society for the benefit of the masses. I think collective organization of the disenfranchised and oppressed is punk, and I think it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of Marxism/communism that scares away a lot of my fellow punks.

Could also put the subreddit in restricted mode so that anyone who wanted to continue posting would have to either move or create an alternate sub.

That seems….unlikely.

I for one am shocked.

The only Tesla owner I know is a Musk-loving, ancap, STEM-bro who probably makes around $160k.

As an engineer, I often find being surrounded by engineers to be exhausting lol
