—What kind of gambling do you usually have here?
—Oh, we got both kinds. We got day trading and betting.

Your success as a greenhorn Silicon Valley intellectual will rest on your ability to shoehorn Girard’s name and the “mimetic theory” with which he’s associated into as many blog posts, podcast interviews, and tweets as possible.

Instructions unclear, accidentally started reading Gerard instead.

Why would I even want to learn anything from the French? As the article points out, they can't even outcompete China, a place well known for its free speech and low taxation. French language doesn't even have a word for entrepreneur.

Oh but don't worry, all of the energy powering all that machine learning is clean and renewable of course, at least that's what I assert beyond evidence. Or even better, evidence in form of a link to some unsourced puff piece blog that also doesn't claim what I just said.

It's not like we could use all that energy for anything else either. If not for the bullshit spam mills soullessly averaging humanity's labors and achievements into vacuous slop to the threnodic tune of myriad gigawatts, those gigajoules would simply evaporate into the cosmic ether. We can't just build distribution networks, can we?

Have you considered the fact that artificial indifference, much like shitcoins before it, is actually driving the construction of clean energy. Because you know, clean energy means literally 100% clean with no downsides so it's good to build even if you waste all of it on stupid shit. Everyone loves getting a giant dam and reservoir where they would otherwise live for the sake of having a robot write ny email for me.

Define “good at writing”.

I don't want to.

Good comedy is very difficult to attain and none of the models are anywhere near it, including the more recent ones.

I concur.

there’s an upvoted post on here about how to take away the average working class tech worker’s job

Are you talking about mine? The point of the post was that techbros and tech industry workers are not the same thing, and that actually the tech workers whose valor those CEOs are stealing are vulnerable to the same tactics techbro startups have used to fuck over workers in other sectors.

A lot of software devs and tech workers are marginalised, neurodivergent or otherwise socially disadvantaged. Too many people in this thread are completely ignoring any kind of intersectionality just because they’re men.

A lot of people in every industry are marginalized, neurodivergent or otherwise socially disadvantaged.

I am a queer, neurodivergent, left wing tech worker myself. Most of the regulars here are probably at least two or three of those things as well. I know lots of tech workers who are in no way techbros, but I've also met some of the least class conscious, most obliviously racist and misogynist opportunist motherfuckers who would lick the boots of every billionaire on earth for a chance to join their ranks. This is about the latter.

I understand how "white" become the word for a sort of assumed racial default, but it's really annoying to have to play this weird motte-and-bailey when people don't understand or pretend not to understand that whiteness is not about skin pigmentation and never was. Wanna check my skin on a Pantone chart againts Hitler's and then guess which one of us he thought was merely an "honorary aryan"?

I wish we had a better word for it.

During WWII everyone computed on slide rules which had zero transistors. Then they invented the transistor which had one transistor. Then they started making mainframes and Ataris and C64s which had like what, hundred or thousand? Then they invented computers and Windows and PS1 that had maybe a million transistors. And then we got dual core CPUs which had double the transistors per transistor. Then they invented GPUs which is like a thousand tiny CPUs in one CPU. Then they made i7 which probably has like a billion transistors and Ryzen which has ten billion and RTX4090 Ti has 79 billion. Now they say China is going to make a phone with trillion transistors.

That's called exponential growth and assuming perfectly spherical frictionless nanometers it will go on forever. In eight to twelve years schoolchildren will be running GPT6 on their calculators. We will build our houses entirely out of graphics cards. AI will figure out cold fusion any week now and Dennard scaling will never hit its limit, right?

The word "Einstein" appears no less than eight times in this story.

Bringing up Hendrix every ten sentences doesn't make you an amazing guitarist either.

my mental netcode

That not only sounds like robot LARP but a gamer attempting to talk like a programmer. I haven't heard the word "netcode" used outside of video games context and even taking it as a metaphor for an aspect of human decision making, it shouldn't be responsible for determining the agency of someone's behavior.
