I think out of those, splendor duel is the best one. We play it a lot for a quick session. While Azul is fine and easy to learn, it is kinda heavy on math if you want to be good.

I agree that patchwork is a good simple 2-player and the theme is kinda funny but man did I think that game was boring. We played two times and now its collecting dust.

Thanks so much for sharing! I agree about AI art, at least spend 1minute to count the fingers/arms and so on… its not that hard.

Nice finds! I have not tried Satori but its on my list

How did Ark Nova work out for you this time? Did you enjoy it?

[–] dpunked@feddit.de 5 points 2 years ago (3 children)

We have settled a bit more and had the chance to whip out some games: We played one game each of Ark Nova and Castles of Burgundy with two players. I think these two games are our current two-player favorites and it does not feel like something is left out when playing it (unlike some other games for more than two players).

We also played two 4-player session of Clank!: Catacombs - I love it more and more, maybe not with two players but with 3+ its great fun. It can be more deadly than the first and I enjoy this. Depending on the explored dungeon, the exit might be very easy or really hard. I like that a lot. Dungeon crawling, deckbuilding, exploration, interesting decision and fun mechanisms.

And last but not least is Amritsar - it was all our first time playing but our host was very well prepared and guided us through the beginning. We were 4 players and the game combines a few different mechanics like those found in 5-Tribes. While the game is interesting, it did not click with me. It was fun playing it but I dont think I would choose it again as a game on the table.

It was similar for me with Heat, I did not enjoy it that much. Sure, interesting concept but in the end, I had little fun playing it.

I also have to correct myself, I meant to say I do not think its too much luck-based. Sure, sometimes everything can go wrong but usually there are many avenues to claw your way back in. I even had games were everything aligned, I got all the cards I needed and could aim to get the max conservation points on the green cards, in the end I lost because I did not have enough power-5 actions to play it all. So important lessons were learned :)

Sorry to hear that this is your experience with Ark Nova. I think its very little luck based but strategy heavy and finding ways to get through a lot of cards to find what you need can be crucial. I personally think its the best two player game out there

For us the dust is settling after moving and yesterday we played some good old Dominion 2ed with Intrigue 2ed. I use Randominion to create the market of cards and simply wanted that at least 50% of the cards are from intrigue. We hd a very close first game with steward (chapel light) and it came down to a single point difference. The other game was a slaughter with Replace, Mill and Nobles all in the game so curses were flying left and right. We exhausted all curses quickly

Which game is it and what did you not like about it?

I am in the market for a new game but struggle a bit to decide which one! Most of the reviewers on youtube I find obnoxious, trying to hard to be funny and often not really useful. How do you decide? Especially if you cannot play the game beforehand?

I would also suggest Terraforming Mars for when its too late

For those playing on BGA, this might be interesting. 31 new games coming to BGA.

In recent years the trend to adapt video games into boardgames is just increasing.

Games like Stardew Valley, Civ, This war of mine and many more coming like Terraria or Call of Duty.

Some of these games like Civ are extremely complex games and I always wondered how well these translate into a boardgame. The production value of these games is often high, but I have my reservation that Stardew Valley the boardgame really captures the same "magic" as the video game did.

What are your thoughts on them? Any really good ones out there worthy checking out (lets exclude Dorfromantik here)?

There are some tiny tin-box style games, often not very deep but maybe there is something out there worth traveling around with?
