Fuck that, he's a racist douchebag who throws immigrants under the bus when it's politically expedient. The fact that he's an astronaut is as impressive and relevant to his character as Ben Carson being an accomplished brain surgeon.

Yeah, that's fair. For the record, I think NPR (and PBS) are among the best and most ethical American news organizations, but they're still only about half as committed to their own ideals as what this country needs.

"Veterans of the Great War claim Germany has lost its way, saying 'Sure, we invaded other countries and used chemical weapons on people, but when we did those things we pretended to be sad about it, these Nazi kids are making us look bad!'"

Anybody who ever worked for ICE can fuck all the way off

Also, somebody should mention the fact that 50 votes in the Senate plus a VP tiebreaker vote was all that was needed to just throw out the filibuster

Amazing how people who accuse progressives of not knowing how stuff works or whatever always forget that little detail

NPR: "Everybody thinks we're a bunch out of touch elites, how do we reconnect with 'Real America'?"

Walmart Advertising executive: "I have an idea for you."

NPR: "Well, you seem like a trustworthy sort without any kind of ulterior motives, please go on!"

Huh, that site normally supports HTTPS, but perhaps they're having some sort of technical issue today

If you need an archived page, here's another resource that does seem to be working - https://web.archive.org/web/20260114142409/https://www.al.com/news/2026/01/ice-arrests-detains-more-children-in-alabama-under-trump-administration.html

Food prices surged 0.7% in December—the largest monthly increase in more than three years—as Americans heading into 2026 face sticker shock at the grocery store with beef, coffee, and produce prices climbing sharply. The data, released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, puts renewed pressure on the Trump administration to deliver on campaign promises to lower everyday costs.

Yeah, and this probably isn't even in the top 10 for terrible things the Clintons have done to politics in this country

You're right, but Adams was such a crappy writer that he produced some decent anti-corporate messaging in spite of himself. Like, I've heard the "laughing at Dilbert strips when I was a kid was what led to me being an anti-capitalist adult" thing several times now (which goes alongside the "JK Rowling made me anti-fascist" thing and "Kanye West made me anti-rascist" thing in the halls of literary ironies).

I definitely agree that's what should happen, but until anything like that does happen I think this GoFundMe is fraudulent. As it stands they're raising money for a court case that isn't going to happen.

Sure, and thank you for your gifts to this community, but gift links aren't permanent copies of an article as it exists at this point in time, which I think is always important to document with certain publications that have a mixed history on journalistic ethics (e.g. NYT, WaPo, CNN, etc. (for the record, I think they're all way better than e.g. WSJ and conservative rags like that, but they're still unreliable))

Easy there Camus

First, I want to extend my gratitude to all the people who have reached out from across the country and around the world to support our family.

This kindness of strangers is the most fitting tribute because if you ever encountered my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind. In fact, kindness radiated out of her.

Renee sparkled. She literally sparkled. I mean, she didn’t wear glitter but I swear she had sparkles coming out of her pores. All the time. You might think it was just my love talking but her family said the same thing. Renee was made of sunshine.

Renee lived by an overarching belief: there is kindness in the world and we need to do everything we can to find it where it resides and nurture it where it needs to grow. Renee was a Christian who knew that all religions teach the same essential truth: we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe and whole.

Like people have done across place and time, we moved to make a better life for ourselves. We chose Minnesota to make our home. Our whole extended road trip here, we held hands in the car while our son drew all over the windows to pass the time and the miles.

What we found when we got here was a vibrant and welcoming community, we made friends and spread joy. And while any place we were together was home, there was a strong shared sense here in Minneapolis that we were looking out for each other. Here, I had finally found peace and safe harbor. That has been taken from me forever.

We were raising our son to believe that no matter where you come from or what you look like, all of us deserve compassion and kindness. Renee lived this belief every day. She is pure love. She is pure joy. She is pure sunshine.

On Wednesday, January 7th, we stopped to support our neighbors. We had whistles. They had guns.

Renee leaves behind three extraordinary children; the youngest is just six years old and already lost his father. I am now left to raise our son and to continue teaching him, as Renee believed, that there are people building a better world for him. That the people who did this had fear and anger in their hearts, and we need to show them a better way.

We thank you for the privacy you are granting our family as we grieve. We thank you for ensuring that Renee’s legacy is one of kindness and love. We honor her memory by living her values: rejecting hate and choosing compassion, turning away from fear and pursuing peace, refusing division and knowing we must come together to build a world where we all come home safe to the people we love.

Federal officers have fatally shot at least three other people in the last five months, according to news reports reviewed by The Marshall Project. In September, Silverio Villegas González, a father originally from Mexico who worked as a cook, was killed while reportedly trying to flee from officers in a Chicago suburb, WBEZ reported. In December, a border patrol agent killed a 31-year-old Mexican citizen while trying to detain him in Rio Grande, Texas. And on New Year's Eve, an off-duty ICE agent used his service weapon to shoot a man in Los Angeles, California, according to CBS News. Authorities said the man had raised a rifle at the officer.

...

In addition to shootings, federal immigration officers have pointed their guns at activists and bystanders. Illinois State Rep. Hoan Huynh said agents blocked his car and pointed a gun at him while he was trying to alert community members about the presence of immigration officers and inform them of their rights, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

A pregnant Illinois woman told Newsweek she thought her life was about to end when a federal agent pointed his gun through her car window, after she honked her horn to alert people ICE was nearby.

In another incident in Chicago, a combat veteran alleged in a court filing that a federal officer said “bang, bang” and “you’re dead, liberal” while pointing a handgun at him.

The remarks are a stark contrast from Jeffries’s criticisms of the scores of other pardons Trump has offered — mostly to his political allies — throughout his second term. Jeffries, joined by most Democrats in his caucus, has bashed those reprieves as both an affront to the nation’s criminal justice system and more evidence that the Trump administration is the most “corrupt” in the country’s history.

...

Cuellar and his wife Imelda were indicted in May 2024 on federal charges of bribery, money laundering and foreign influence peddling. The Justice Department accused the pair of accepting $600,000 in bribes from two separate businesses: a Mexican bank and a petroleum company run by the government of Azerbaijan. In return, Cuellar used his influence in Congress to push for policies beneficial to both, according to the Justice Department.

...

In announcing his pardon Wednesday, Trump [accused] Biden of using the Justice Department to target Cuellar because he “bravely spoke out against Open Borders.”

“Sleepy Joe went after the Congressman, and even the Congressman’s wonderful wife, Imelda, simply for speaking the TRUTH,” Trump wrote Wednesday on his Truth Social account.
