I’ve been having trouble keeping this instance up - right now, it’s a problem with proxy errors between the docker containers as well as with the Ansible scripts. It’s taking too much time to maintain. I'll be shutting down wayfarershaven.eu per 31 October 2023.

That means that the fountainpens community here will also disappear. Anyone who would like to restart this on another instance is more than welcome to do so.

Hey all! My apologies for the fact that the instance has been down. For those who are curious, it turns out that the Lemmy volumes had ballooned and taken up all the space on the server. I've reclaimed the space and set a recurring task to make sure that it automatically gets cleaned up going forward.

This shows the vulnerability of small instances run by a single admin - I wasn't able to sit down and troubleshoot the issue. I don't have a good solution for you beyond recognizing that sometimes things willl take time when there isn't a team or paid business with SLAs. If you have things you'd like to see change, I'm happy to discuss.

This looks like it was great fun. Would you take part and if so, which house would you represent?

Update: it's fine to share your thoughts on the author's personal views but please leave the insults at the door.

Locking this thread under rule #2 - we don't have the bandwidth to mod a political discussion. If you want to have this discussion, please use one of the communities speficially for that purpose.

Fountain pens - I started with a 30 euro Parker but it seems like just one is never enough.

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 59 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Asking about the worst Lemmy communities is an easy way to share negative sentiment which has no real value and causes a lot of work for the mods. We're a small team and looking at the comments that had already been posted, it wasn't something that was worth our time to keep up with. Hence rule #2.

Knitting - if you find the right audience, you can chat for hours, but it can also lead to blank looks or lots of assumption.

Sharing because I can see this community having thoughts to share. :)

With so much note taking apps nowadays, I can't understand why does anyone still write notes with pen and paper. You need to bring the notepad, book or that paper to retrieve that information, and most of the time you don't have it in hand. While my phone almost always reachable and you carry when you go out. For those still like to do handwriting, there's many app does that and they can even convert it to text notes.

So, if you still write notes with pen and paper, why?

Just putting this here for those who might miss it.

I saw season 1 and it was...okay? I gather that Wheel of Time diehards were upset about plot deviations. I never read the books so that didn't matter much to me. IMO the world setting seemed janky - it was as though Robert Jordan couldn't build an original world to save his life and borrowed bits and pieces of different Earth cultures and threw them in a blender. I could pass on the next season but I have too many people around me who will want to watch it so I feel somewhat compelled to.

What did you think of season 1? Will you be watching season 2?

One developer asked ChatGPT to finish George R.R. Martin's long-stalled book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, upon which the Game of Thrones TV show is based. And the AI did...well, not too bad. But don't expect it to replace Martin anytime soon, either.

New EDC Backpack (i.imgur.com)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/1933672

Got this Victorinox Vx Sport EVO Backpack from my beautiful wife as birthday present recently! I was looking at these a few years now and I am super happy with it. It comes 11 years of warranty and feels well made and durable (as known from Victorinox). Went with me already on a few adventures and I can tell you it works well for Notebooks, Picknicks, even as diaper backpack or just random stuff. Fits all my needs. I also like the little details like a small compartment for one of their Swiss Army Knifes (unfortunately too small for my Cybertool L, but perfect for my folding Victorinox Lunch Knife).

Given that we've already had two threads on this topic day, removing under rule #4.

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 54 points 1 year ago

This isn't an open ended question and as such doesn't belong on this community. You're welcome to continue the discussion over at !fediverse@lemmy.ml

I'll lock the thread but not remove it so that you can see what has been said so far.

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 61 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Thanks for the update, but this breaks rule #1 - it's not a question and the community is Ask Lemmy. We can leave this up for a few hours so that there's a central place to chat.

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 60 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

OP, I'm thinking this sounds an awful lot like a support question, because it's about using Lemmy and Lemmy functionality. You posted so you probably already have an opinion - why does this question belong in this community?

I'm asking because it seems borderline and I don't want to remove it purely due to interpretation.

I read the comic a few years back and loved it. When I heard Netflix had picked it up, I crossed my fingers so hard. I've forgotten where I saw the comment, but it was something along the lines that the movie is a polished, cleaned up version. I can't agree more - what a fun, moving, gorgeous treat!

Have you read the comic or seen the movie? What did you think?

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 30 points 1 year ago

This isn't a question, it's a rant. Removing.

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 46 points 1 year ago

This is a support/how to use Lemmy question and would be a better fit in !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml

[-] hsl@wayfarershaven.eu 53 points 1 year ago

You can troubleshoot this through the process of elimination.

  1. Don't make any calls from home for a day or two. That'll tell you if it's something localized to your home/location or if it's specific to your phone/contract.
  2. Disable all extra technology like Bluetooth. That'll tell you if it's a Bluetooth or other connection. Ideally, turn off all extra connections beyond cellular. You could also try voice/video calls vs. phone data - I doubt this would matter, but it's always the last thing that you check.
  3. Break your house into a few different zones. If they comment on a conversation held it in one part of the home but not another, that'll give you an idea if it's location specific.

Probably not the most helpful tip, but how about taking this opportunity to learn another language?

The concept of the Fediverse is horizontal rather than vertical growth - i.e. More smaller instances rather than increasing the capacity of the larger ones. We're also seeing that Lemmy currently only scales to a certain degree. Right now, most instances are either covered by their admin because they're so small that the cost is manageable or instances are setting up donations.

It's conceivable that a business would set up an instance and charge for it - but I think it unlikely. A year town the road, though, who knows?
