Looks like we have our mod team! I'll keep everyone informed if there are any changes.

I have also added Rule #12:

If a post is tagged with a specific gender identity, keep the conversation centered on that identity.

This used to be a bot post in r/egg_irl. Hopefully it's not controversial, but let me know if you have feedback on it.

Okay, everyone, I made an update based on your comments. Please check over the sidebar and see if it looks okay.

[Meta] Seeking Moderators (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by library_patron@lemmy.blahaj.zone to c/egg_irl@lemmy.blahaj.zone

We are currently looking for additional moderators. If you are interested in helping out, please leave a comment below.

I was a Reddit /r/all lurker. I just kind of wanted something to look at, latest news, etc. It’d be nice if I could just sign up under an instance which is focused on providing that basic content. Trying to find communities and subscribe to them is a little cumbersome.

I haven't really been looking at it to see how well it's working, but this page was built to mimic r/all. It aggregates from these communities as described here.

Hey, all. I started posting here because it was the result that came up when I searched for "egg_irl" on browse.feddit.de, but it turns out that this community is currently unmoderated—the moderator listed in the sidebar over there is a banned user. I think we should take steps to get moderation in place now rather than later. I have already begun the process, but need your input for subsequent steps.

The first question is who would moderate. Ideally we would have at least two people sharing the load. I can help out, but I am not suitable as a primary mod because I am often away for long periods of time. If any of you reading this are willing, please leave a comment.

The second question is whether we want to take this opportunity to move !egg_irl to a different host instance. lemmy.ml, as you know, is hit pretty heavily with traffic, and I don't see that changing, so we could probably get more responsive and reliable federation from elsewhere, incidentally helping to take some load off of that server. It also might be more apropos to have !egg_irl on an explicitly LGBTQA+ instance.

So, two ways this could go down, once we have moderator candidates:

Option 1: Keep !egg_irl on lemmy.ml

  • Pro: We keep the content and subscribers we already have.
  • Con: We contribute to and suffer from the load on lemmy.ml.

Assuming the request I put in gets me temporary control of !egg_irl, this option is pretty straightforward: I appoint the mods, and off we go.

Option 2: Migrate !egg_irl to another instance

If we choose this option, I would like to nominate my home instance, lemmy.blahaj.zone. Not only is it explicitly LGBTQA+-friendly, but its performance has been pretty good in my experience, we have understanding and responsive admins, and there's very little chance that the instance is going anywhere.

  • Pro: We no longer contribute to or suffer from the load on lemmy.ml.
  • Con: We have to migrate the four posts we currently have if we want to keep them, and we have to notify subscribers here to subscribe to the moved community.

The process in this case is a little more involved, but not bad: Someone with an account on the new home instance (I could take care of it if we choose lemmy.blahaj.zone) creates the new community and appoints the mods, we ask posters to repost their memes/comments there, we delete the old posts and put up a notice about the community's new home, and then after a suitable transition period we delete the old community.

Please share your thoughts in comments below so that hopefully we can develop a consensus. Thanks for bearing with these growing pains.

Requesting c/egg_irl (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Only listed mod is a banned user who therefore has not been active for about two years.

A link to one of my posts.

I wish, but lemmy.blahaj.zone is not mine, just one of the larger medium-sized instances that have been around for a while. But some people do do as you describe.

Since you found this sacred knowledge, it would probably be a good idea to comment on the GitHub issue in addition to here, since that's where most people will be looking if they get these errors.

Update courtesy of @chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org: kbin.social has enabled DDOS protections that "may cause some issues with the federation". They will return to normal operation when possible.

No worries. My post hasn't gotten a clear answer yet either, except for suspicions that it's issues with load . I just wanted to make sure that if someone does figure out the issue, we get everyone who is asking filled in.

This post suggests that Kbin magazines can be subscribed to in the same way as Lemmy communities, by searching for them, possibly waiting for one's instance to pull info about the magazine in, and then visiting the magazine through one's instance. However, although my home instance is federated with kbin.social, I am not able to get any search results for kbin.social magazines, and it seems that I am not the only one; see here, here, and here, though that last case seems to have fixed itself on its own. The behavior is the same whether I search by URL (e.g., https://kbin.social/m/fediverse), by magazine name with an at-sign (e.g., @fediverse@kbin.social), or by magazine name with a bang (e.g., [!fediverse@kbin.social](/c/fediverse@kbin.social)).

Hey, I just wanted to let people know that, since this was cross-posted, it does not track edits made to the original. You can find the latest version at https://lemmy.ml/post/1160417. (Thanks, @Barbarian@lemmy.reckless.dev, for sharing it here!)

Good idea. Tentative edits made. I currently have the link sorting by "hot" rather than "active", since I think that's closer to how r/all works (?), but I'm not sure which option is best—thoughts?

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/74156

From the latest commits:

We are happy to release our final 1T token version of OpenLLaMA 3B and 7B. We’ve updated the evaluation results. We are also happy to release a 600B token preview of the 13B model, trained in collaboration with Stability AI.

Haven't tried it yet, and the 13B model is still in the works, but hopefully this will be a better foundation than the leaked Meta AI model, not only for more reproducible research, but because nonacademics will be completely in the clear from a legal standpoint to run this stuff locally.

(These instructions are for using Lemmy in a browser. If you are using an app, some steps may differ.)

How to Join Lemmy

To use Lemmy, you need to be a member of one instance from the list at https://join-lemmy.org/instances. You will still be able to see content from anywhere, but the instance you choose will determine:

  • What URL you use to log in to Lemmy,
  • What content shows on the homepage when you select "Local" or "All",
  • Who moderates your instance, and
  • What rules you agree to when you sign up.

Choose an instance that matches your interests, language, and region. (If you want more information about an instance, you can tap its "Join" button, which will show you its current homepage in the main view and its description in the sidebar. You can also check the tables here and here.) Please avoid joining instances that are already crowded (1K+ users/month). If an instance gets overcrowded, it can start running slowly or experiencing downtime, so choosing an uncrowded instance will give both you and others a better Lemmy experience.

Once you have decided on an instance, tap its "Join" button to open it and then tap "Sign Up" in the upper-right corner. Fill out the form and wait for your account to be approved.

When your account is approved, log in and customize your profile and settings. If you change your language settings, select "Undetermined" in addition to any languages you speak so that you can still see posts and comments that are not tagged as being in any particular language.

How to Find and Subscribe to Communities

There are four ways to find communities through Lemmy:

  1. To browse communities that others in your instance are already subscribed to, tap the "Communities" tab at the top of the page and choose the "All" scope. Tapping on a community name will open it through your instance.

  2. To browse communities across all instances, visit https://browse.feddit.de/. Tapping on the community's name will open it, but probably not through your instance (in which case the page will say that you are not logged in). Instead, follow these steps:

    a. Copy the community's URL or remote name. You can use the copy button next to the community name, you can open the community outside your instance and copy the URL from your address bar, or you can open the community outside your instance and copy the remote name (which will look like [!community@instance.tld](/c/community@instance.tld)) from the sidebar.

    b. In your instance, tap on the "🔍 Search" button in the upper toolbar.

    c. Make sure that you have chosen "All" for each of the four filters: "Type", "Scope", "Community", and "Creator".

    d. Paste the community's URL or remote name into the search field and tap "Search".

    e. One of the results should be the community shown as an icon, a name, and a subscriber count. If you do not see it, or it is buried too deep in the search results, try changing "Scope" to "Local". If that does not work, you may need to wait a bit and try again.

    f. Tap on the community in the search results to open it in your instance.

  3. If you want an experience similar to Reddit's r/all, visit https://lemmy.directory/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Hot/page/1, which aggregates from these communities as described here. As in Option 2, you can copy and search for a community's URL to open it in your instance and subscribe to it.

  4. If you don't see a community by browsing, subscribe to https://lemmy.ml/c/findacommunity and make a post about what you're looking for.

Once a community is open in your instance, subscribe to it by tapping on the "Subscribe" button at the top of the sidebar. It will then appear in the "Subscribed" section of your "Communities" tab, and its posts will show on your home feeds.

Can't find a community you're looking for? If your instance allows it, you can create the community yourself by tapping "Create Community" in the upper toolbar.

Quick question: I wrote a comment on a post hosted at lemmy.ml, and it shows up here, but when I check on lemmy.ml itself, my comment is not visible. Did I do something wrong, or is there a technical reason that my comment is not going through? I do see posts and comments from others from this instance at lemmy.ml…
