Myanmar’s military coup leaders have urged their opponents to put down their weapons and start political dialogue, in a surprise move that was swiftly rejected.

The State Administration Council (SAC), as the military has styled itself since seizing power in February 2021, urged the ethnic armed groups and People’s Defence Forces (PDF) fighting against military rule to give up what it described as the “terrorist way” and start political dialogue.

At least 3,661 people have been killed in Haiti in the first half of this year amid the “senseless” gang violence that has engulfed the country, according to the United Nations.

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on Friday that the death toll between January and June – which included 100 children – showed that last year’s “high levels of violence” had been maintained.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Francis wrapped up a troubled visit to Belgium on Sunday by doubling down on his traditional views on women and abortion and demanding that Catholic bishops stop covering up for predator priests — a scandal that has devastated the church’s credibility around the globe.

Francis revisited the key thorny topics of his trip to Belgium during his in-flight press conference coming home, praising Belgium’s late King Baudouin as a “saint” for having abdicated for a day in 1990 rather than sign legislation legalizing abortion.

BRUSSELS (AP) — As the war in Ukraine enters a critical period, the European Union has decided it must take responsibility for what it sees as a security threat in its own neighborhood, and it’s preparing to tackle some of the financial burden, perhaps even without the United States.

JERUSALEM (AP) — With Israel’s defense minister announcing a “new phase” of the war and an apparent Israeli attack setting off explosions in electronic devices in Lebanon, the specter of all-out combat between Israel and Hezbollah seems closer than ever before.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Every day at 7 a.m., President Andrés Manuel López Obrador strolls onto a stage in Mexico’s National Palace, clad in a smart suit and tie, and peers out at a room of bleary-eyed reporters and social media personalities. “Buenos días, look alive!” the 70-year-old leader calls out in a gravelly voice.

thank you, I don't really care about top mod and if i made some big mistake to be demoted from that i only wish to know so i can do better. If the admins don't want me to be a moderator any more i would appreciate knowing what I did wrong for closure. I have been removed from the discord when removed from being a moderator so can only communicate here.

[-] little_cow@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

would you be willing to add me back to the team? I did nothing wrong and care about the world news community?

[-] little_cow@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago

Really quite sad that I was removed without any sort of communication or a chance to respond, I have spent months removing posts and comments that were against the code of conduct. I have responded to criticism regarding the moderation of the community in the past and the way this has occurred has broken my heart about a community i cared about.

I'll share some recent quotes from messages I've sent to other mods and admins:

"Hello I wanted to send a message to say that I am interested in helping more. I really like lemmy.world and want the platform to succeed and want to help."

"Even if another is chosen for these roles I would be happy to help as a community moderator to help lemmy.world grow and continue to be the best lemmy instance! Thanks for everything you and the admin team do 🙂"

Many scientists have discussed the impact that positive feedback loops have in climate science and why events will occur with increasing frequency and severity in the coming years:

Here are some short films that discuss the various areas that these occur within.

For me I have hope that by spreading awareness and organizing we can work together to pressure our governments around the world to embrace the change needed

From what I understand Putin is using a stricter definition of "cluster bombs" as a muntition containing a bomblets submunition.

I have seen of Russian videos munitions are hypersonic missiles, thermobaric bombs (incendiary submunition), and timed remote mine submunitions (a timed self-destruct feature or one that turns it inert after a while) but none utilizing a pressure fuse like the butterfly mines that were used by Ukraine.

They are terrible weapons regardless of definition
