After the TOTK release, all the amazing mechanics, graphics, and creativity? While I think maybe TOTK is setting new bars, it really shows how much they’ve just churned out the Pokémon games without any thought.

I definitely find the content to be deeper and more meaningful. I like the slower pace but I find myself excited to see posts with lots of comments.

It really does sound like a new version of We Didn’t Start the Fire.

I agree with everything you’ve said and that it is disappointing. I do think there is merit in continuing to protest and send a message.

However, I don’t think there’s anything that can move the Reddit leadership team back. Because even if they went back on this API issue, the continued process of the degradation of reddit as a service has been a long term thing. It seems to me that the Fidelity downgrade of their evaluation has pushed them even further down this path.

I truly am done with them. Even if they come back from all this, what’s left there? Somebody else pointed out that over the year, generally interactions became more unfriendly on reddit, spam and changes to the algorithm increasingly pushed away from the platform we all loved.

I see this situation and how it was so exacerbated by Spez and the leaderships absolute failure as a blessing. There’s a lot of alternative ways to spend time on the internet, to connect and learn. Beehaw has been really good to me the last couple days, I am excited for a future here and ready to not contribute toward the mess that reddit has become anymore.

This situation made very clear what writing is on the wall for reddit. I don’t care if people go back, it hasn’t been the reddit I knew and cared about for a long time.

To all the people saying “oh well this won’t replace reddit,” I wouldn’t want it to. Reddit has changed.

Here’s to new beginnings

I agree. At this point, even if Reddit backed down for everything it seems like the future there is doomed no matter what. I got a lot of joy out of connecting with people and getting content out of Lemmy this weekend. Looking forward to seeing what this site grows into.

In any meaningful way, I am done with reddit. I have been a daily user for 12+ years. It’s very clear that reddit is headed toward a future of catering to the lowest common denominator. They’ve lost their way and the site is continuing to head down a bad path with the IPO. Their leadership is already showing they can’t handle a negotiation between 3rd parties, I’m sure the creep crawl toward monetization will continue down focusing this lowest common denominator and remove all differentiation from their service.

Reddit has three uses - cultivated communities, niche information and scrolling.

I was very happy to find real connection and community here on lemmy over the last couple weeks. I read a thread earlier that was discussing reddit really has become a pretty unfriendly, transactional place over the years and I realized that resonated with me.

I’ll still have to surface interact with reddit via google searches for niche and specific information.

As for scrolling, it feels like Reddit is really only focusing on this as their future which feels really shortsighted. There are a dozen services and websites to scroll on from social media to news sites to honestly replacements like lemmy.

Overall, reddit is just one service and I am sort of grateful for this new opportunity to find a place online to connect and make a community. I don’t want lemmy to be “new reddit,” I want it to become its own thing. I’ll miss what reddit was but it hasn’t been truly good in a long time.

I really like the communities I found in beehaw but have been steadily exploring.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Lemmy and Beehaw over this weekend. I’m not expecting anything out of reddit.

Reddit was my home for 12 years and I really feel like it boiled down to three really uses of my time:

• cultivated communities
• niche knowledge
• scrolling through all

I have had a taste of being part of a community this weekend that reminds me of what reddit was like a decade ago. This really removed the sting of disconnecting all my apollo widgets and shortcuts. Lemmy, kbin, etc may lead to a new future for those of us looking for somewhere new.

Niche knowledge? I think that’s one thing that just will be on reddit for the foreseeable future but as communities move and shift away, it’ll disperse across the internet. I do see myself still searching through reddit results via google when searching for a personalized review or specific information. But it will become a get-in, get-out process.

Scrolling? Reddit leadership is so dumb. they’ve catered to this feature and this user base for all the marbles of their IPO. Scrolling is the least unique feature to reddit compared to other social media. And reddit’s scrolling was highly dependent on your feed and could sometimes not be that great. Scrolling can be replaced by anything from tiktok to instagram to other forums and new sites

Even this weekend on Beehaw, I’ve seen reviews of fountain pens, a storm over Scotland, trailers for new games on the horizon and little bits of people’s lives shared and connected. If I can continue to have an experience like this? I won’t even miss reddit.

It’s going to be an interesting new future

The API issue was a huge nail into the coffin of the user experience at reddit. For sure, mobile site will disappear and then old.reddit.

Everything about this is utterly tone deaf, you can see it in u/spez answer in his AMA about how the company will continue to be profit driven until it’s profitable. Bro, this is not how you talk to your user base. Your actions, policies, and strategic outlook should be toward driving the user experience and your service so that it is profitable. Not degrading all things for grinding down every extra cent at the expense of your entire companies differentiators.

Fuck spez, fuck reddit.

It’s really amazing to see the incompetence of Huffman. As the CEO, it’s his responsibility continue to drive his company while being committed to its values. They’ve lost touch with what made reddit special in favor for the lowest common denominator user base.

Reddit has three real function, first as a cultivated collection of subreddits, second as a warehouse of incredibly niche and specific information, and lastly as a place to scroll.

They’ve catered to this third audience which I see as the most shallow of user. This part of their function can be easily replaced by plenty of other services. With such tone-deaf and dishonest actions of spez, it’s obvious there was no foresight on trying to set up a smooth transition.

There absolutely could have been a solution here to generate income for Reddit without coming to this painful nuclear ending. It’s been writing on the wall for a while with the stretch toward IPO that their motives and value had become entirely based on money.

See that’s not how companies work though. They may need to be profitable to exist but they exist to provide a service or product. By sacrificing and disenfranchising a loyal core of your user base out of lack of foresight and problem solving, this is just another nail in the coffin of their inevitable demise.

Huffman is a loser and a sell out. Get fucked Spez.
