They will start setting standards that other instances will be pressured to follow. Those standards will be mechanisms to control the fediverse and make it a data-gathering ad & sales platform.

This us exactly the threat. They'll start setting standards that other instances will be pressured to follow. Those standards will be ways to control the fediverse and make it a propietary data-gathering and sales/advertising platform just like everything else.

I don't believe in a soul that's separate from the body, or that lives on afterward. But the way that "inanimate" matter can spin up thoughts and feelings and a consistent personal experience that can last for decades... It's almost fair to call that thing a soul. It's fair to talk about nurturing your soul and growing a soul.

Is there a page where we can see which instances are ban-crazy and which ones actually federate and communicate?

It's amazing that spez saw what Musk did and thought, "I should do that to Reddit."

[-] pattmayne@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 year ago

Reddit was a living thing. An ecosystem of interaction which was so robust it frequently generated content that was useful in Google search results. The shitposts were essential to that ecosystem. There were also bots, which is inevitable.

That ecosystem has collapsed.

Except instead of Nazis (?!?!) it's corporations.

I'm socially liberal and economically on the left (as in I like democracy, I accept capitalism, but I want a lot more socialist policies). Downtrodden people should be given assistance, but everyone else should be free to live out their power and ambition unless it gets in other people's way. I'm against most right wing political and social positions. But I'm even more against defederation and mass blocking. I don't want a safe space. There are too many things we need to process with conversation.

I agree.

BUT some degree of infighting means we're alive and engaged with the platform. I think it's healthy infighting.

The only threat to this burgeoning community is the same old divide & collapse nonsense that separates citizens under their overlords everywhere.

I would create accounts and start calling to defederate instances which allow non-polite (or politically incorrect or otherwise offensive) communities.

We didn't just survive the trolls on reddit. We thrived amongst them. We can handle them. We can block them.

I want curatorial tools to curate my own feed. I absolutely 100% do NOT want any admins telling me what I can't read. And going to another instance is no solution if that instance is blocked.

I don't want to be on a purely polite ecosystem, or a purely right-wing-idiot ecosystem. I want access to everybody, and the tools to curate that experience.

The trolls do NOT have the power to take us down. But the admins definitely do.

Welcome to the Defediverse.

Reddit became popular through dangerous openness. I resent having some admin curate my experience. Give users more control to curate their own experiences. Stop getting in the way of what I want to read.

I'm in Canada and we just drink the tap water. Some northern and remote native communities have to boil their water and it's considered an embarrassing failure of basic human rights.
